Peaceful retreat with thermal spa and Mediterranean surroundings
Savor the ultimate Spanish getaway with ocean views & spa
Yes. Spain has a long tradition of thermal spas: mineral springs have been used since the days of the Roman Empire, and in recent years, more and more hotels with spa centres have been opening both along the coast and in the mountainous regions. Here, thanks to the mild climate year-round, you can enjoy wellness treatments; the flight time from the UK is short, and the cuisine is so delicious that you’ll happily stay a little longer just for it. At the balnearios inland and at hotels offering thalassotherapy on the coast, you can immerse yourself in completely different atmospheres.
Andalusia is the perfect place to enjoy the winter sun and hammam-style baths; Granada and Seville have Arab baths, while the coastal areas are home to golf resorts and wellness centres. Galicia and the Basque Country have a high concentration of thermal and seaside resorts. The Balearic Islands are perfect for relaxing on quiet coastlines, and in the inland towns of Catalonia, there are wellness hotels that are easily accessible from Barcelona.
In the spring and autumn, the climate here is mild; you can enjoy the outdoor pools, and prices are lower than in the height of summer, which is why these seasons are considered the most balanced. Thermal resorts in the north have pleasant weather from May through October, as the weather is stable during this time. In Andalusia and the Canary Islands, daytime temperatures are comfortable, so even winter is a good time to travel. Prices rise during Easter, in August, and during the Christmas season.
At Spanish wellness hotels, access to the wet area—including the indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and heated lounge chairs—is generally included in the room rate. Massages, facials, and thermal treatments must be booked and paid for separately; they are often offered as part of package deals. Spanish hotels usually serve breakfast, whereas thermal resorts in the interior and coastal resorts often offer half-board (with breakfast and dinner).
Plan 3–4 nights for a first wellness trip, which are ideal, so you can enjoy the treatments in complete tranquillity for 2 full days. Traditional wellness programmes at Spanish balnearios (spas) are based on daily sessions, they are generally designed for a longer stay—at least 7 nights. If, in addition to moments of tranquillity, you’d also like to visit local attractions, you can plan a few extra nights in the nearest town.
Both work, but the surrounding environment plays an important role. For couples, adults-only hotels or small resorts are ideal, where it’s quiet at night and the treatment rooms are designed for two people. For families, on the other hand, large coastal resorts with a kids’ club and a family pool are a better fit. Some wellness centres set a minimum age of 16 and enforce quiet hours.
