Yes. Cyprus has an extensive coastline with many sandy coves; the water here is warm and crystal-clear, and the swimming season lasts much longer than in most other regions of Europe. Many resorts sit right on the sandy beach, so, you can walk from your room to the sea in just a few minutes. If you want a break from the beach, mountain villages, Roman-era mosaics, and vineyards await you in the island’s interior.
The southern and eastern coasts are lined with sandy beaches of the highest quality. Around Protaras and Ayia Napa, there are pale, shallow bays that are ideal for non-swimmers and children. In the west, around Paphos, the coastline is rockier, with many coves and headlands. Limassol has a long city beach, and the Akamas Peninsula in the west keeps wilder, unserviced beaches.
Paphos is usually named the most beautiful, thanks to its harbour, medieval fortress, and the archaeological park located along the coast. Kyrenia in the north also deserves similar praise thanks to its horseshoe-shaped harbour, surrounded by mountains. For those seeking a more peaceful and atmospheric setting, there are Polis and Latchi, located near the Akamas coast. You’ll find the relaxing atmosphere of small villages and crystal-clear waters.
Protaras and Coral Bay, with their gently sloping sandy beaches, shallow waters, and numerous unpretentious taverns, are ideal for family holidays. Ayia Napa is popular with the younger generation and comes alive late into the night. Couples tend to prefer hotels in Paphos, Latchi, or in the hills of Limassol. These areas are quiet at night, and wineries or mountain villages are within easy reach.
Swimming is pleasant from May through November. The water temperature rises through June and peaks in August and September. During this time, the water sometimes even feels warmer than the air in the early morning. You can even swim in April, as long as you don’t mind that the water will be a bit cool at first. In winter, the water temperature drops to around the mid-teens, so most hotel pools are heated during this time.
In Cyprus’s resort areas, in addition to bed and breakfast, half board and all-inclusive options are widely available. Breakfast is usually served buffet-style and often includes local cheeses, olives, eggs, and pastries. Hotels located directly on the beach typically feature a pool, a sun deck, and at least one restaurant. The availability of kids’ clubs, spas, and water sports centres varies by resort, so check the detailed information for each offer.
