Why we love it

The setting

Corendon Amsterdam New-West, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel is in the Nieuw-West neighbourhood on Henk Sneevlietweg, about 5 km from the city centre. Compared to the Grachtenkwartier, this is a quieter neighbourhood with a distinctly residential character; it also offers easy access to Vondelpark and the Stedelijk Museum. Connections to the city centre are provided by tram and metro lines, and the surrounding streets are perfect for a stroll. During the day, the atmosphere here is peaceful, and in the evening, you can enjoy the lively ambiance in the bars.

What to expect

The hotel features a swimming pool, a fitness centre, and a wellness centre with a sauna, steam room, and massage rooms. Since the restaurant, bar, and café are open almost all day, you can enjoy a meal without ever leaving the hotel. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and on-site parking makes it very convenient for guests arriving by car. The rooms are decorated in a modern style, in keeping with the “Tribute Portfolio” brand concept.

Things to do nearby

Located right next door, Vondelpark is the perfect place for morning walks or bike rides. If you’re interested in contemporary art, the Stedelijk Museum is right nearby. There’s a tram stop along Henk Sneevlietweg, from which you can reach the city centre, and the entire New-West neighbourhood is home to many cafes and shops within walking distance. From here, it’s easy to reach the museum district, the area around the Rijksmuseum, and the Grachtenring neighbourhood.

Best for

Good for couples and friends who want a design-led base with a pool and spa, without paying central-Amsterdam prices. Families work too, with the pool and space of a 4-star property outside the tight canal streets. Drivers appreciate the on-site parking, and anyone planning a spa afternoon between sightseeing runs will get value from the sauna and steam bath.

How to get to the hotel

Schiphol Airport is roughly a 15-minute drive or a short train ride away, which is one of the quicker airport hops in Europe. From Schiphol you can take a direct train towards Amsterdam and change for a tram or metro out to New-West, or grab a taxi straight to the door in about 20 minutes depending on traffic. Drivers can use the hotel's on-site parking.

Your 3 days, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival, Vondelpark and a first drink

After checking in and dropping off your luggage, consider taking a stroll through Vondelpark, which is about a 10-minute tram ride from the hotel, to stretch your legs. Take a stroll around the pond, watch the cyclists, or enjoy a coffee in one of the park’s gazebos. Before dinner, head back to the hotel for a swim or a visit to the sauna, and then treat yourself to a pre-bedtime cocktail at the hotel bar. Don’t wear yourself out—after all, you still have two whole days left to enjoy life to the fullest.

Day 2

Museums and canal-side wandering

Start by visiting the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, and then, if you’ve booked your tickets in advance, stop by the National Gallery and the Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein. Take a break for lunch at one of the cafes on a side street. Spend the afternoon, you can stroll along the canals in the Jordaan neighbourhood, stopping by bookstores or breweries along the way. Take the tram back to New-West and end the day with a relaxing treatment at a spa.

Day 3

Markets, bikes and a final swim

Hire a bike for the morning and ride the quiet cycle paths through New-West and into the city, or take the tram to Albert Cuyp market for stroopwafels and street food. Pick up a few things to take home from the shops around De Pijp. Come back for a last swim and steam, change, and head out for an early dinner in town before your journey home.

FAQ

Where is Amsterdam located?

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland in the western part of the country. The city stretches along the IJ Bay and the Amstel River and is about 20 km from the North Sea coast. Schiphol Airport is about 15 km southwest of the city centre and is connected to it by high-speed trains and highways.

What are the best things to do in Amsterdam?

Take a walk or a bike ride along the canal promenade, visit the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum, and spend an hour or two in Vondelpark. Stroll through the Browse the Albert Cuyp and Noordermarkt markets, enjoy a boat ride through the canals, and explore the Jordaan neighbourhood. Day trips to Haarlem, Zaanse Schans, and—depending on the season—the tulip fields are easily accessible by train.

Is Amsterdam expensive for tourists?

Amsterdam is among the cities in Western Europe with a relatively high cost of living. The cost of museum admission, dining out, and drinks along the waterfront can add up to a significant amount, and during peak season, hotel rates in the city centre are often quite high. However, if you stay at a place like this hotel in the New-West neighbourhood, you can keep your accommodation costs to a minimum. Taking the tram, buying meals at the supermarket, and visiting free parks and markets will help you stay within your budget more easily.

Where is the Red Light District in Amsterdam?

De Wallen (the red-light district) is in the oldest part of the city centre, east of Dam Square, around the Oudezijds Achterburgwal and Oudezijds Voorburgwal canals. It is within walking distance of Amsterdam Centraal; the area features numerous bars and cafes, as well as the historic Oude Kerk. From the hotels in the New-West neighbourhood, it is easily accessible by tram or metro.

Is Amsterdam safe for visitors?

Amsterdam is widely recognized as a safe city for tourists: the rate of violent crime is low, and the public transportation system is well-developed, even at night. Be wary of pickpockets in busy tourist areas, on trams, and at Central Station, as well as cyclists who ride at high speeds and do not stop for pedestrians. Walk on marked sidewalks and look both ways before crossing a bike path.
