Arrival and first toes in the sea
Upon arrival at Cagliari Elmas, you’ll have a short drive to Quartu Sant'Elena. After checking your luggage and changing into light clothing, head straight to Poetto Beach to enjoy your first swim in the sea and admire its colour in a peaceful setting. Wander the sun isn’t quite so hot, take a stroll along the promenade, grab a cold drink at a kiosk, and then head back to the bar at a nearby hotel to relax before dinner.
Slow beach day on Poetto
Spend a whole day relaxing on Poetto Beach. Get a spot on the sandy beach early, before it gets too crowded, go for a swim before the wind picks up, and take turns enjoying the sea, the shade, and a cool drink from the kiosk. As you stroll along the coast toward Cagliari, you’ll notice how the atmosphere on the beach gradually changes. In the late afternoon, enjoy a granita, and then try some seafood at one of the beach restaurants.
Cagliari old town wander
Drive about 8 km along the coast toward Cagliari. Head up to the Castello district, take in the view of the bay, stroll through the fortress, and then visit the cathedral. Have lunch at a trattoria in Marina or Villanova. Consider dishes featuring fregola, curione, or bottarga. In the afternoon, take a stroll through the shady streets and, before heading back, enjoy a cold beer on Via Roma.
Flamingos and salt pans
Behind Poetto lies the Molentargius wetland, where countless pink flamingos gather. Rent a bike or walk there from the beach, following a narrow path that winds through the old salt pans. If you have binoculars, be sure to bring them along. The trail is flat and easy to walk, and the landscape, bathed in morning light, makes for a beautiful backdrop for photos. Return to the hotel for a swim, then enjoy dinner in the centre of Kvarta, located a short distance from the beach.
Villasimius and the southeast coves
Try driving east along the coastal road toward Villasimius. This is one of the most beautiful driving routes on the island. Along the way, take a short detour to explore coves such as Cala Regina or Mari Pintau. Once you reach Villasimius, choose one of the beaches—such as Punta Molentis or Porto Giunco—to spend the rest of the day there. The sea here shimmers with a turquoise-blue hue reminiscent of the Caribbean. On the way back, take your time, admire the sunset over the sea, and then enjoy a light snack at your hotel.
Devil's Saddle and hidden bays
Cape “Sella del Diavolo,” on the western edge of Poetto, is a place well worth visiting for a short walk. Set out early in the morning, before it gets too hot, hike up the trail, enjoy the views on both sides of the cape, and then climb down the cliffs for a swim in the sea. Then, in search of calmer waters, head further on to Calamosca or Cala Fighera. Return to Quartu Sant'Elena, enjoy a hearty lunch, and treat yourself to a long afternoon nap.
Nora ruins and southern beaches
Drive south toward Pula and visit the ruins of Nora. Roman-era mosaics, a theatre, and the remains of a Punic city stretch right along the seashore. Consider combining this outing with an afternoon trip to the beach at Nora or Su Guventeddu. If you have time on the way back, it’s worth making a short detour to Chia. The sand dunes and lagoon are well worth the detour. Once you return to the hotel, you can take another dip at Poetto at sunset.

When is the best time to visit Sardinia for a September beach trip?
Early to mid-September—the very period this trip is scheduled for—is one of the most highly recommended times to travel. The water temperature has been rising all summer, and although it’s still hot during the day, the extreme heat is gone, and the August influx of tourists has subsided somewhat. The water temperature is high enough for swimming, the evenings are pleasantly cool, and prices will most likely be lower than during the peak of the season in August.

Is a hire car worth it for this trip?
If you want to visit places other than just Cagliari and Poetto, it’s recommended that you have a car. Villasimius, Chia, Nora, and the coves in the southeast are much easier to reach by car, and the hotels have parking lots. If you’re staying in Poetto and are content with occasional trips to Cagliari, the local buses that run along the coast are more than sufficient.
