Why we love it

The setting

Le Soleil Hotel & Spa 1926 is on the island of Malta, which is so small that you can cross it from one end to the other in an hour, and which is home to the harbour, the town of Honeystone, and numerous beaches. The surrounding area is ideal for walks: there are cafes, bakeries, and bus stops nearby, and the atmosphere here is more peaceful than lively and cheerful. The rooms exude a characteristic Mediterranean brightness, to which the hotel pays special attention, and time passes in complete relaxation at the on-site spa.

What to expect

From standard double rooms to the “Sunny's Suite” and family rooms—in these bright, sun-drenched rooms of various categories, you can enjoy a holiday centred around the spa. Since the spa is right in the hotel, you won’t have to take a taxi to enjoy treatments or moments of relaxation. The day unfolds at a leisurely pace. Spend the morning in complete relaxation, enjoy cultural experiences in Valletta or Mdina in the afternoon, and then return to the hotel to unwind at the spa—that’s what your day could look like. The service is marked by the warmth that only a small hotel can offer, and the building itself still retains the charm of the 1926 era.

Things to do nearby

In Malta, after just a short bus ride, you can enjoy a wealth of attractions. The Baroque cityscape of Valletta and the Grand Harbour are right nearby, while the “Three Cities” are on the opposite side. Surrounded by tranquility, the ancient capital of Mdina is in the interior of the island and offers sweeping views of the entire island. In Sliema and St. St Julian’s, you can enjoy the waterfront promenades and shops, and ferries depart from the north for the island of Gozo. Right along the coastal road, there are many coves and rocky beaches where you can go for a swim.

Best for

It’s ideal for couples looking to enjoy a relaxing getaway with wellness treatments, as well as for travellers who prefer to use it as a base for exploring Malta rather than staying at a large resort hotel. It’s also recommended for solo travellers and small groups who prefer an area they can explore on foot, as well as a variety of room options and a more relaxed pace of life compared to the hustle and bustle of St Julian’s.

How to get to the hotel

Malta International Airport—the only airport on the island—is about a 20- to 30-minute drive from the hotel, depending on traffic conditions. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall, and you can also use taxi-booking apps. In addition, buses run from the airport to the major cities. Since there is no railway in Malta, transportation from the airport is by bus, taxi, or rental car.

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and a slow look around

Upon arrival at Malta International Airport, check in at your hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing. Take a stroll through the streets around the hotel, find a bakery where you can try pastizzi, buy some water and sunscreen, and get your bearings to locate the bus stops. If you book a spa appointment in advance for the coming days, you’re guaranteed a slot at a time that’s convenient for you. Have dinner at one of the nearby restaurants and go to bed early to recharge after a tiring flight.

Day 2

Valletta's streets and Grand Harbour

Take the bus to Valletta and spend the morning strolling through the grid-like streets of this Baroque city. If the line isn’t too long, it’s worth stopping by St. St John's Co-Cathedral. Walk to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, enjoy the magnificent view of the Grand Harbour, and time your visit to catch the midday salute. Have lunch at one of the cafés on Republic Street, then stroll down to the waterfront. Return later in the afternoon and go for a swim or treat yourself to a visit to a spa.

Day 3

Mdina and the quiet interior

Head inland and visit Mdina, the walled former capital, to stroll through its winding, limestone-paved streets in a peaceful setting before the crowds of tourists start to arrive. Take a break to enjoy a cup of coffee in Bastion Square, which offers sweeping views of half the island. Just outside the city walls lies Rabat; if you’re in the mood for an underground adventure, be sure to visit St. St Paul's Catacombs. Return by bus, enjoy a late lunch, and then, before dinner, relax for about an hour at the spa.

Day 4

Sea day along the coast

Let's spend the day swimming. The rocky beaches along the coast of Sliema and St. St Julian’s are easy to reach by bus. Or head a little further north to Golden Bay and enjoy the sandy beach there. Bring a towel, a book, and cash for beach chairs. After lunch at a beach kiosk and some time drying off in the sun, head back to the hotel in the afternoon. Consider ending the day with a visit to a hammam or a massage.

Day 5

Gozo by ferry

Ride to Cirkevva and take the ferry for a day trip to the island of Gozo. Rent a car or take a hop-on, hop-off bus to explore the Victoria Citadel, the Marsalforn Salt Pans, and Xewini Beach. Enjoy lunch in the shade of the fig trees in Victoria, then head back to the ferry terminal before sunset. Since it will be a long day, it’s worth relaxing in a cozy setting in the evening—take advantage of room service or take a stroll to a restaurant for dinner.

Day 6

Three Cities and harbour views

Take the ferry from Valletta to Birgu—one of the “Three Cities,” whose history dates back even further than that of the capital. Along the waterfront, historic palaces and moored yachts line up one after another, while the streets behind them lead to the Fort St Angelo. Angelo. After lunch on a terrace by the harbour, take a stroll through Senglea and admire the view of Valletta from the tops of the watchtowers. With the sunset behind you, head back on the ferry.

Day 7

Spa morning and departure

Pick up a bottle or a bag of Maltese honey or nougat as a souvenir. After checking out, you can leave your luggage at the front desk if your flight departs a little later, and enjoy one last cup of coffee at a spot with a beautiful view. Use the la airport is just a few minutes’ drive away, you’ll have plenty of time.

FAQ

Is this hotel a good pick for a couples' spa break?

Yes. The hotel’s spa will be one of the highlights of your stay. This hotel doesn’t have the bustling atmosphere of a large resort; instead, it maintains the peaceful ambiance that’s unique to small hotels. Since spa appointments during peak hours sell out quickly, the hotel recommends that you book your treatments as early as possible. Room options range from standard double rooms to suites for guests who need more space during a longer stay.

Can families with children stay here?

Since the hotel also offers family rooms, the hotel is happy to welcome guests with children. The island of Malta itself is also a great place to holiday with children. All attractions are within easy driving distance, and the island has plenty of safe beaches and restaurants where you can enjoy a relaxed meal. If you need a crib, a room with connecting doors, or specific bedding, please let the hotel know when you make your reservation. These options vary depending on the room type.

Is mid-September a good time to visit Malta?

This is one of the best times to travel. Thanks to the lingering warm air masses of summer, the sea temperature remains high, the stifling August heat has subsided, and with the end of summer holiday in European schools, the island becomes even quieter. There are still plenty of sunny days during the day, though brief showers may occur from time to time toward the end of the month. For evenings on the coast, it’s a good idea to pack a few light items.

What is there to do on site besides going out?

The main highlight of this hotel is its spa, which is perfect for spending a relaxing day between sightseeing trips. Otherwise, the hotel features a minimalist style and is designed with the idea that guests will enjoy Malta itself as an adventure. The harbour, the Old Town, and the beaches are just a few minutes away by bus or taxi.

Do you need to hire a car to get around from the hotel?

That’s not entirely true. Malta’s bus network extends from the central bus station in Valletta to all major cities and beaches, and for short trips, it’s convenient to use taxis or taxi-booking apps. If you want to reach a secluded cove or plan to visit several places in the interior of the island in a single day, a rental car might come in handy; however, for most travellers, buses and the occasional taxi ride are more than enough.
