Why we love it

The setting

This hotel is on the coast of Georgioupolis in western Crete, just a few minutes’ walk from Peristeras Beach and the town centre. It’s more of a quiet coastal area than a lively party district; taverns, small shops, and a long sandy beach are all within walking distance. Local buses run along the main street, and the entire area is easy to explore on foot.

What to expect

Expect a proper beach resort with a swimming pool, a water park and sports on tap: tennis, table tennis, snorkelling, diving and a gym. Rooms are set across a large 5-star property with family-friendly touches, and the sea is minutes from the door. Evenings tend to be relaxed, with a drink at the bar and dinner at the restaurant.

Things to do nearby

Since Peristeras Beach is right next to the resort, you don’t need to plan ahead to spend a day at the beach. If you walk a little further along the coast, you’ll come to Kourna Beach and the private beach of the Sandy Beach Hotel; Georgioupoulis Beach, with its village square, is also very close by. Kavros Beach, popular among water sports enthusiasts, is also easily accessible on foot or by bike.

Best for

It’s perfect for families and couples looking to enjoy a relaxing beach holiday in Crete. For children, there is a separate playground, a kids’ pool, and a kids’ club, while adults can combine relaxing by the pool with playing tennis, snorkeling, or working out in the gym. From late July through early August, the days here are hot and dry. This time of year is perfect for long swims or relaxing afternoons in the shade of the trees.

How to get to the hotel

The nearest airport is Chania Airport, which is about a 45-minute drive west on the highway along the northern coast. Heraklion Airport, on the other hand, is in the opposite direction and can be reached by car in about two hours. You can arrange a private transfer when making your reservation. Since the hotel offers free parking, renting a car is a convenient way to explore the coast and the area around Kournas la in detail.

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and first look at the coast

Take your time unpacking your suitcases, take a stroll to Peristeras Beach, and enjoy your first swim in the sea. Stroll along the coast for as long as you like, then head back through the village of Georgioupoulis Beach to enjoy a coffee at sunset by the river mouth. Dinner at the resort’s restaurant will be the perfect start to a relaxing evening. Afterward, you can sit back at the bar with a glass of your favourite drink in a peaceful setting and think about your plans for the rest of the week.

Day 2

Slow beach day at Peristeras

Give yourself a full beach day right on the doorstep. Peristeras Beach is moments from the resort, so grab a towel, a book and go. Break up the sunbathing with a snorkel session, a swim out past the shallows, and lunch back at the pool. Late afternoon, try a game of table tennis or tennis before a shower and a sunset stroll along the sand.

Day 3

Water park and pool time

Spend the day on the hotel grounds, where the water park and pools take centre stage. Children can take turns having fun in the kids’ pool, on the playground, and at the kids’ club, while adults relax on nearby lounge chairs. Order lunch by the pool, and after a swim, you can work out in the gym or enjoy a moment of quiet in the shade. After dinner, you can end the day with a walk to the beach.

Day 4

Kournas Lake and Kourna Beach

In the morning, for a change of pace, you’ll head to Kourna Beach, and then drive inland toward Lake Kournas—the only freshwater lake on Crete. Here you can go paddle boating or enjoy lunch on the lakeshore in the shade of the plane trees. In the afternoon, you’ll return to the coast to cool off with a swim, and the kids can play to their hearts’ content at the playground. You’ll have a simple dinner at the resort hotel.

Day 5

Georgioupolis village and river

Walk into Georgioupolis and follow the little chapel causeway out into the sea, one of the village's signature photos. Potter around the central square, stop for a frappé, and browse the small shops. In the afternoon, Georgioupolis Beach is right there for a swim. Come evening, pick a taverna in the village for a change of scene from the resort restaurant.

Day 6

Snorkelling and diving day

Today, let’s spend plenty of time enjoying water sports. You’ll head to the rocky areas of the bay to go snorkeling and watch the fish—or sign up for a scuba diving lesson if you want an even more exciting experience. Between activities, you can relax under a beach umbrella and have a snack. Then you can head away from the beach to play tennis or run on the treadmill. As dusk falls, take a long shower and enjoy dinner in a relaxed atmosphere.

Day 7

Kavros Beach and quiet coves

Kavros Beach is a little further north along the coast and is famous for its water sports. On windy days, it’s worth planning to spend half a day here. The rest of the time, you can walk to the private beach at Sandy Beach and enjoy its quieter, sandy shore. Bring along a light snack, an engaging book, and your swim goggles. In the afternoon, head back to the hotel for a swim in the pool, and before dinner, why not play a game of table tennis with your family?

FAQ

Is the hotel a good choice for families with children?

Yes. This resort is specifically designed for families and features a children’s playground, a kids’ pool, and a kids’ club, so even the youngest guests can have a wonderful time here. The sandy Peristeras Beach is right nearby, and the water park on the resort grounds is especially popular with kids who can’t get enough of swimming.

What is there to do on site besides the beach?

Plenty. The resort has a water park, a swimming pool, a tennis court, table tennis, a gym and fitness facilities. Water-based activities include snorkelling and diving. There's also a spa area with a sauna and steam bath, plus a bar and restaurant when you want to slow down.

When is the best time of year to visit Georgioupolis?

From late July through August, Crete is in the thick of summer. The weather is hot and dry—the perfect time to enjoy the beach—and it fits perfectly into the itinerary for this trip. Water temperatures reach their peak, and the days grow longer. Since the beaches are expected to be crowded and the nightlife is lively, it’s a good idea to reserve restaurant tables in advance and go swimming early in the morning when it’s quietest.

What beaches are within walking distance?

Peristeras Beach is right next to the resort, while Kourna Beach—the private beach of the Sandy Beach Hotel—and Georgioupoulis Beach are just a few minutes’ walk along the coast. Kavros Beach, known for its water sports opportunities, is a bit further away, but it can be reached quickly either on foot or by car.

Is parking available at the hotel?

Yes, hotel guests can use the parking lots on the hotel grounds free of charge. So, if during your stay you’d like to visit Lake Kournas, take a trip to Chania, or explore the quiet beaches along the northern coast, the hotel recommends renting a car.
