Arrival, gardens and into Keswick
Arrive in the afternoon and take your time settling in — the four acres of grounds are worth a slow loop before you do anything else. Walk into Keswick for a wander around the market square and the independent shops, then stop for a pint at one of the pubs in town. Head back for dinner in the hotel restaurant and a nightcap in the bar and lounge before an early night.
Derwentwater and the western fells
Let’s start with breakfast, and then you’ll drive or walk to Derwentwater to spend the morning there. You can either take a cruise on a pleasure boat across the lake or hike along the trail to the Catbells—the climb is steep, but you’ll be rewarded with a view that opens up beyond the lake. For lunch, you can either bring a packed lunch or stop at a café in Portinscale on the way back. In the afternoon, you’ll drive to Whinlatter Forest, take a walk along the forest trails there, and then return to the hotel to enjoy dinner.
Borrowdale drive and slow goodbye
After breakfast, you should head south on the road through Borrowdale. This route, which winds past stone bridges, sheep pastures, and the river, is one of the most scenic driving routes in the Lake District. Climb up to Honister Pass, and if you’re interested, you can take a tour of the slate mine. Or simply make a quick stop to take a photo at the top. If time permits, return via Buttermere, pick up your luggage from the hotel, and head home in the afternoon.
