Yes. Malta has warm water temperatures and crystal-clear seas, and the swimming season usually runs from June to October. The drive from the airport to most of the coastal resorts doesn't take long. Sandy coves are mainly found in the north, while the central and southern parts of the island feature rock platforms and lidos with ladders into deep water. You can visit the islands of Gozo and Comino on a day trip, allowing you to enjoy the coast even more.
Mellieha Bay has the largest sandy beach and, thanks to its shallow waters, is suitable even for small children. Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa are located on the northwestern coast and are both backed by cliffs. The Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino enchants visitors with its turquoise-blue shallow waters and attracts many tourists on boat tours. On the island of Gozo lies Ramla Bay, known for its reddish-orange sand.
Sliema and St. Julian’s are particularly well-suited for couples and first-time visitors who want to stroll along the waterfront and explore the nearby shops and restaurants. Bugibba, St. Paul’s Bay, and Mellieha, with their sandy beaches and large resort hotels, are ideal for family holidays. Valletta is particularly appealing to those who want to enjoy the architecture and nearby museums. The island of Gozo offers a more peaceful, rural atmosphere and is perfect for a relaxing getaway.
August is the hottest month, followed by July; maximum daytime temperatures typically range from the low to mid-30s Celsius. Because water temperatures peak from late August through September, early autumn—when the heat subsides—is the ideal time for swimming. In May, June, and October, it’s still warm enough to enjoy the beach, and prices are more affordable with fewer crowds.
In the south and southeast, in the areas around Marsaxlokk, Birzebbuga and Marsaskala, temperatures are generally slightly higher than in the north, and the climate is drier. Because the island of Malta is relatively small (its total length is about 27 km), regional differences on the island aren’t particularly significant. A sea breeze blows along the coast, tempering the summer heat, while inland towns such as Mdina are generally hotter during the day.
Hotels along Malta’s coast generally offer room-only, bed-and-breakfast, or half-board options; all-inclusive packages are mainly found in large resort complexes around St. Paul’s Bay and Mellieha. A pool, a sun deck and an on-site restaurant are common features, and breakfast is usually served buffet-style. Since space by the sea is limited, some hotels in town centres have rooftop pools instead of on-site gardens.
