About the hotel

The Royal Highland Hotel sits on Station Square in central Inverness, a minute from the trains and about 15 minutes from the airport. The building has been running for over 160 years, and its grand staircase (said to have inspired the Titanic's) leads up to 86 traditionally furnished bedrooms with antique pieces. Victorian Market is 100 metres away, the Visit Scotland centre a short walk further, and Merkinch Local Nature Reserve is under a kilometre off. Best for couples and city-breakers who want character over chain-hotel polish.

How to get to the hotel

Inverness Airport is roughly 15 minutes by car, and Inverness railway station sits on Station Square about a minute's walk from the door. Guests driving up the A9 can use the hotel car park. Transfers can be arranged when booking.

How many days in Inverness is enough?

Two to three days covers Inverness itself: a wander through Victorian Market, the Visit Scotland centre on Academy Street, and a walk out to Merkinch Local Nature Reserve or Torvean Golf Club. Add a day or two if you want to drive out to Loch Ness, Culloden or the wider Highlands, which most visitors do from this base.

Which city is better to visit, Edinburgh or Inverness?

They serve different trips. Edinburgh is the bigger cultural capital, with the castle, Royal Mile and a packed festival calendar. Inverness is smaller and calmer, and it works best as a Highlands base: Loch Ness, Culloden and the coast are within easy reach. Many travellers pair the two, taking the train north from Edinburgh.

Which is nicer, Aberdeen or Inverness?

Aberdeen is the larger granite city on the east coast, with more shops, museums and nightlife. Inverness is smaller, greener and sits right on the River Ness at the gateway to the Highlands, so it wins for scenery and day trips to Loch Ness or Cairngorms. For a short Scottish break with countryside on the doorstep, Inverness tends to feel nicer.
