Why we love it

The setting

This hotel is in Jandía, on the southern tip of the island of Fuerteventura, near Matorral Beach and just a few minutes’ walk from the boardwalk. In this peaceful coastal neighbourhood, where cafes, shops, and restaurants are within walking distance, time passes very slowly, even in the height of summer. Guests can enjoy the best of both worlds: spend a relaxing day by the pool or take a stroll through the lively neighbourhood, which is perfect for an evening walk or dinner at a restaurant.

What to expect

This 4-star beachfront hotel was built specifically for a relaxing holiday. Guests can enjoy a swimming pool, a wellness centre with a sauna and massage rooms, a fitness centre, and a variety of sports facilities available right on the hotel grounds. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a safe, a TV, and other amenities. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and parking spaces are provided for guests who have rented a car. For children, there is a separate pool, a playground, a game room, and a kids’ club.

Things to do nearby

And since the Jandia Golf Course is nearby, you can play a round of golf without wasting time on a long drive, and the Moro Habre shopping centre is also within walking distance, so you can conveniently shop for everyday items and souvenirs there or simply take a stroll in a cozy atmosphere. After a short drive south, you’ll be treated to a view of the Handia Peninsula with its light sandy beaches and long headlands, where traces of lava are still visible.

Best for

Good for families thanks to the children's pool, playground, playroom and Kids club, and equally suited to couples who want a beach base with a spa and easy access to golf. Sporty travellers get diving, snorkelling, tennis, table tennis and a gym on site.

How to get to the hotel

The drive from Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), near Puerto del Rosario, to Jandía—which is about 80 km to the south—usually takes about 90 minutes. You can also book a shuttle service when making your reservation. If you’d like to explore the peninsula on your own, you can rent a car at the airport. Taxis and intercity buses also run along this route.

Fifth time at this hotel over the years.. and there’s reasons why..

Perfect location in Jandía, a nice 15 minute stroll down the sea front to the shops and restaurants, no other hotels in close proximity, so it feels somewhat private… Read full review on ZenHotels →

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and first steps on the sand

Upon arrival at Fuerteventura Airport, pick up your rental car or take a shuttle service to get to Jandía in the south of the island. After checking in at the hotel, just soak up the atmosphere. Put on your swimsuits, stroll to Matorral Beach, and enjoy the views of the surrounding area along the coast. When you return to the hotel, you can start by taking a leisurely swim in the pool, followed by dinner at one of the nearby restaurants along the waterfront.

Day 2

Matorral Beach and the lagoon

Spend the morning at Matorral Beach, read a book, and swim to your heart’s content in the Atlantic Ocean. The shallow lagoon at the back of the beach is the perfect spot to splash around in the water or watch the wild birds near the salt flats. After lunch at a seaside café, you can spend the rest of the afternoon by the pool. As dusk falls and the light softens, consider taking a stroll along the boardwalk toward Morro Jable.

Day 3

A round at Jandia Golf

Book a tee time early in the morning at the Jandia Golf Course, located right next to the hotel, and enjoy a round of golf before the heat really sets in. After the your round, return to the hotel, have lunch, and spend a relaxing day by the pool, in the spa’s sauna, or in the massage room. If you still have some energy left, you can play a casual match on the hotel’s tennis courts or at the table tennis tables before dinner at “Jandía.”

Day 4

Underwater Jandía

Give the day to the sea. Try a diving session or take out snorkelling gear from the hotel's water sports facilities and explore the rocks along the coast. The waters around Jandía are clear and warm in August, with plenty of small fish close to shore. Rinse off, eat something light and spend the late afternoon on a sun lounger with the sound of the Atlantic in the background.

Day 5

Morro Jable and the harbour

Moro-Habre sits close enough to walk from the hotel, though you could drive. Wander the old fishing district, poke around the shops at Morro Jable shopping centre, grab a coffee by the marina. Watch the ferries roll in from Gran Canaria, then duck into a seafood spot for lunch. In the afternoon, head back to the hotel, relax by the pool, and end the day with a cocktail at the hotel bar.

Day 6

Cofete and the wild south

Hire a 4x4 or join an organised trip out to Cofete Beach on the peninsula's wild western side. The drive over the mountain track is slow, but the reward is a vast, empty stretch of sand backed by cliffs. Bring water and snacks; there's little out there. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon and reward the day with the sauna and a long shower before dinner.

Day 7

Sport, spa and slow hours

Ease off on your last full day. Start with the gym or a tennis match, then move to the spa for a massage and time in the sauna and solarium. Have lunch nearby, then claim a lounger by the pool with a cold drink. Take a final walk along Matorral Beach at sunset, stopping for photos of the lighthouse and the dunes as the light drops.

FAQ

Is Occidental Jandía Playa suitable for families with children?

Yes. The hotel offers a variety of amenities for children, including a kids’ club, a game room, a playground, and a separate children’s pool. Matorral Beach, with its gentle slope, is just a few minutes’ walk away, and parents can relax and unwind by the main pool while their children play to their hearts’ content on the hotel grounds.

When is the best time to visit Fuerteventura?

A trip in Your August coincides with the peak of the tourist season in the Canary Islands. Although the weather here remains hot and dry, the climate along the coast stays pleasant thanks to the warm sea temperatures and steady trade winds. Highs on the islands sit between 27 and 29 °C, with long sunny days that keep the beaches busy. Therefore, the hotel recommends that you book restaurant tables and tee times at the golf course in advance.

What's there to do on site besides the beach?

Plenty. The hotel has a swimming pool, a spa with sauna, solarium and massage room, plus a gym and fitness facilities. Sporty guests can use the tennis court, table tennis and water sport facilities including diving and snorkelling. There's also a bar, restaurant and café for downtime.

Is golf easy to arrange from the hotel?

Yes. Jandia Golf Course is within walking distance, you can play a round of golf early in the morning and be back at the pool by noon. In August, when demand is particularly high, the hotel recommends that you book your tee time in advance. Since there is little shade on the course, you should also bring sunscreen.

Can you get around without a hire car?

That’s possible. Matorral Beach, the Moro-Habre shopping centre, and the Jandia Golf Course are all within walking distance, and there are local buses that connect Handiya with other parts of the island. Of course, it’s more convenient to get to Cofete and the beaches in the north by rental car, but if you plan to spend most of your time at the beach, it’s not necessary.
