Why we love it

The setting

Sitting in Funchal on Madeira's southern coast, The Pestana Village Garden Hotel is a few minutes' walk from the city centre and waterfront. The hotel is situated in a quiet residential neighbourhood, and there are many cafes and small shops just a few blocks away. Lido Beach sits close by too, and buses down the main street get you to the Old Town and marina fast.

What to expect

The hotel is an apartment-style hotel with a pool, a fitness centre, and a garden. The rooms are equipped with a refrigerator and a hair dryer, and breakfast is served to guests every morning. You can visit the hotel’s bar and restaurant, and enjoy free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Parking spaces are available for guests arriving by rental car, allowing you to comfortably take day trips around the island.

Things to do nearby

Since the “Lido” beach complex is just a few minutes’ walk away, you can start your day with a morning swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Santa Catarina Park and the CR7 Museum are right next to each other, and both are within walking distance. On rainy days, the “La Vie” shopping centre is a good option, and if you’d like to take a short walk to the city centre, you’ll find the Holy Trinity Church a little further from the hotel.

Best for

This is the perfect option for couples and families looking for a place to stay in Funchal with a pool and a kitchen, within easy walking distance of the beach. It’s also a great choice for those planning to rent a car and explore the island, as there are parking spaces on the property.

How to get to the hotel

Madeira Airport (Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport) is about 20 km east of Funchal; depending on traffic conditions, it takes about 25 minutes to reach by car. Shuttle buses from the airport, taxis, and the “Aerobus al” run to the city. Guests renting a car can park it in the hotel’s parking lot. This makes it much easier to travel to the north coast and to Pico do Arieiro.

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and the Funchal seafront

After checking in and dropping off your luggage, take a stroll to the “Lido” bus terminal to look around and get your bearings in the area. Follow the pedestrian path east toward the city centre, and stop by a café along the way for a cup of coffee. Return to the hotel, take a dip in the pool, and then have an early dinner at the nearby Tasca restaurant. Spend the evening in a relaxed atmosphere so you can recharge your batteries for tomorrow.

Day 2

Old town, market and CR7

Spend the morning in Funchal’s Old Town, stroll down Rua de Santa Maria and admire the colourful doors, or wander through the Mercado dos Lavradores in search of fruit and fish. Take a walk to Santa Catarina Park to enjoy the view of the bay, and then stop by the CR7 Museum to see Ronaldo’s trophies. To round out the day, have a poncha at a bar near the marina.

Day 3

Cable car and Monte gardens

Take the cable car from the old town up to Monte, high above Funchal. Walk through the tropical gardens, visit the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte and, if you fancy a rush, ride a wicker toboggan back down towards Livramento. Return to the hotel for a late swim and a rest before dinner at the on-site restaurant.

Day 4

Levada walk in the laurel forest

Rent a car or hire a guide and head to the mountainous region to take a hike along the levadas through Madeira’s laurel forests. The “Levada do Caldeirão Verde” and “25 Fontes” trails are very popular and wind along irrigation channels, past waterfalls, and along shaded paths. Be sure to bring water and a light jacket. Once you return to Funchal, grab lunch at a café before heading to the pool.

Day 5

Pico do Arieiro and the peaks

Set out early in the morning, before the clouds roll in, toward Pico do Arieiro and enjoy one of Madeira’s most breathtaking panoramic views. If you’re feeling fit, take a section of the PR1 mountain trail toward Pico Ruivo. The descent passes through Ribeiro Frio, where you can try some trout or take a short loop trail through the forest. In the evening, consider enjoying a cozy dinner somewhere near the marina, followed by a stroll along the harbour.

Day 6

West coast beaches and villages

Take the coast road west to Câmara de Lobos, the fishing village Churchill painted, then continue to Cabo Girão skywalk for a look straight down the cliff. Push on to Ponta do Sol for lunch and an afternoon on the pebble beach. Back in Funchal, use the pool to rinse off the salt before heading out for dinner.

Day 7

Shopping and lazy pool day

Try to take things at a more leisurely pace. Take a leisurely stroll to the La Vie shopping centre, browse the stores or have a coffee in an air-conditioned café, then walk around Holy Trinity Church and the surrounding streets before heading back. Spend the afternoon by the hotel pool with a book, and if you still have some energy left, you can visit the gym or fitness centre. End the day with dinner at a seafood restaurant near the Lido.

FAQ

Is the hotel suitable for families with children?

Yes. The hotel has a game room and a children’s pool, and since the rooms are apartment-style and equipped with a refrigerator, they’re convenient for storing snacks and children’s supplies. Lido Beach is just a few minutes’ walk away, so you can enjoy some ice cream or go for a swim in the ocean. Plus, Santa Catarina Park has a large lawn where kids can run around to their hearts’ content.

What is there to do on site besides the pool?

In addition to the pool, a fitness centre and gym are also available. The hotel’s recreational activities also include diving. On evenings when you don’t feel like going into town, you can visit the hotel’s bars and restaurants, and the garden-surrounded atmosphere is perfect for spending a relaxing day.

When is the best time to visit Madeira?

At the end of Late August, when the hotel were there, the weather was warm and sunny, and the water temperature was around 22–23 °C—perfect conditions for swimming at the Lido or taking a boat ride. Since restaurants are likely to be crowded in the evening, it’s a good idea to make a reservation in advance. It’s best to start your walk through the rolling landscape of Levada early in the morning.

Do you need a hire car?

Not for Funchal itself. The old town, CR7 Museum, Santa Catarina Park and Lido are all walkable or a short bus ride away, and parking is available at the hotel if you do rent. A car makes sense for two or three days if you want to reach Pico do Arieiro, the west coast or the levadas.

Is breakfast included and what is served?

This price includes breakfast, which is served to you at the hotel every morning. The hotel offers a wide selection of fresh fruit, bread, pastries, cheese, and hot dishes so you can set out with plenty of energy for a walk in Funchal or enjoy a day on the island. You can enjoy coffee at any time during breakfast.
