Why we love it

The setting

Melia Koh Samui sits on the north-east coast of the island, right beside Choeng Mon Beach. The water is a few steps from the resort, and the layout runs down toward the sand through gardens and a large free-form pool. From the grounds you look out over the bay, where small boats sit at anchor and the hills of the headland rise across the water. It is a quieter corner of Samui, away from the busier beach strips, so you get the sea and the calm without giving up easy access to the rest of the island.

What to expect

Rooms are done in soft greys and dark wood, with wide beds, a writing desk and large windows or doors that open toward the garden and pool. Across the resort you will find more than one pool, including a beachfront one that looks straight out to sea, plus sun loungers set on the sand. There is a restaurant with an open side facing the water, a lounge bar, and spaces to sit through the evening. Breakfast is served as a buffet each morning. The pace here is relaxed rather than packed with activity.

Things to do nearby

Choeng Mon Beach is on the doorstep, so most days can start and end on the sand. A short walk or drive takes you to Mini Golf International for a low-key afternoon. Wat Plai Laem, a colourful temple with a large white Guanyin statue, is under two kilometres away, and Plai Laem Beach is close by as well. The Big Buddha temple, one of the island's best-known sights, is a short trip up the coast. Fisherman's Village and the airport are both an easy taxi ride from the resort.

Best for

Couples and anyone after a calm beach base on Samui. The setting suits slow mornings by the pool, sunset drinks and short trips out to temples and beaches nearby.

Your 6 days, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and first swim

Arrive at Samui airport, which is only a short drive away, and settle into the room. Spend the first afternoon by the pool and walk out onto Choeng Mon Beach to get your bearings.

Day 2

Slow day by the pools

Take the day slow at the resort. Move between the garden pool and the beachfront one, order lunch at the water-facing restaurant and watch the boats come and go across the bay.

Day 3

Temples up the coast

Head out to Wat Plai Laem to see the white Guanyin statue and the lake temple, then carry on to the Big Buddha shrine a little further up the coast.

Day 4

Fisherman's Village

Spend the morning on the sand at Choeng Mon, then go over to Fisherman's Village in Bophut for the shops, cafes and old wooden shophouses along the seafront.

Day 5

Out on the water

Try something on the water, such as a kayak from the beach, or book a boat trip to the islands off Samui. Come back for a quiet dinner and drinks at the lounge bar.

Day 6

Last morning

Take a last swim and a slow breakfast before checking out. The short ride back to the airport leaves room for an unhurried final morning.
