Romantic holidays in Maldives FAQ

Is the Maldives good for a romantic holiday?

Yes. The Maldives is primarily home to resorts located on small islands. Since, as a rule, a single resort occupies an entire island, you can enjoy quiet beaches and warm, shallow waters here, and there are virtually no day-trippers. Overwater villas, private plunge pools, and meals on the beach are an integral part of a holiday here. Days pass very slowly here. Snorkelling, spa treatments, and boat trips take up most of the day.

What makes a Maldives resort right for couples?

An adults-only island, villas with direct access to the sea and the beach, and a private sunbathing terrace—these are the features that couples particularly appreciate. The quality of the coastal reef also plays an important role. When you can go snorkelling right from your villa, there’s no need to waste time booking a tour. If you plan to spend about a week on the island, check how many restaurants there are and whether there’s an overwater spa.

Which atoll should you choose in the Maldives?

Since most of the islands in the North and South Malé Atolls can be reached by speedboat in less than an hour, they are ideal for short getaways. Baa Atoll attracts snorkellers during manta season, as well as for its marine reserve. Ari Atoll is home to whale sharks and features long house reefs. Visiting the far southern atolls requires a domestic flight, so it is better suited for extended trips.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The dry season of the northeast monsoon typically lasts from December through April; this is the driest and sunniest time of year. From December through February, prices peak, and the islands are at their busiest. In March and April, the weather remains dry, and the seas are warmer. From May through November, there is more rain and wind, though these are most often short, sudden showers, and prices at most resorts are lower during this time.

What do Maldives resorts usually include?

Most resorts provide half-board, full-board or all-inclusive meal plans. Breakfast is almost always included in the room rate and is typically served buffet-style. Snorkelling gear, non-motorised water sports, and gym access are often provided free of charge. Transfers by speedboat or seaplane incur an additional fee, which can significantly increase your total expenses, so check prices before booking.

How long should you stay in the Maldives?

For most couples, 7 nights are sufficient. If you’re flying in from the UK and want to visit several islands, it’s worth planning a stay of 10–14 nights. Since travel time is added to the flight duration (about 10 hours), a stay of fewer than 5 nights will mean you spend too much time travelling to and from the islands. If you split a longer stay between 2 atolls, it will add variety to your trip.
