Yes. Italy packs in the Alps, the Apennines, volcanic islands, and pristine coastlines, and in addition to 25 national parks, there are hundreds of regional nature reserves. In a single week you can hike high limestone ridges in the morning and swim in the warm sea by afternoon. Hiking trails are marked with signs, mountain huts serve meals, and many hiking areas have a village at the trailhead.
The most popular form of outdoor recreation is hiking, for which there are numerous trailsโranging from short walks along the lake shore to multi-day hikes, such as the Alta Via hiking trail in the Dolomites. In addition, you can go on bike rides through the flat Po River valley, go kayaking along the Ligurian coast, go horseback riding in the Maremma, or go snorkelling in the marine reserves off the coasts of Sardinia and Sicily. In winter, the mountainous regions in the north offer opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing.
The Dolomites and the Aosta Valley are the perfect destination for hikers and skiers who want to enjoy the high mountains and reach them by cable car. Tuscany and Umbria are ideal for leisurely trips through hilly villages, vineyards, and easy trails. For families, lakeside destinations work well, as they offer the chance to go on a boat ride or enjoy leisurely walks. In Sardinia, Sicily, and the Cilento region, you can enjoy both the rugged coastline and swimming.
The best time to travel is May, June, and September. In the Alps and the Apennines, wildflowers reach their peak in late spring; in September, the sea warms up, the hiking trails become quiet, and the grape harvest is in full swing in the interior of the country. Because it can get hot in Central and Southern Italy in July and August, choose higher-altitude destinations if you travel then. Mountain huts and cable cars are generally open from late June through mid-September.
Outside the cities, family-run guesthouses and small mountain hotels predominate; breakfast is usually included in the room rate and typically consists of pastries, bread, cheese, and dried meat. Hotels in the Alps or on the shores of lakes often have their own wellness centre with a spa, swimming pool, and sauna. In ski resorts or hiking areas where restaurants are scarce, half-board is usually offered (with breakfast and dinner).
If you want to explore a specific region, plan a 7-night stay; to combine mountain areas with the coast, plan 10โ14 nights. If you spend a week in the Dolomites, youโll be able to enjoy hiking for 4โ5 days, weather permitting. Driving times also matter. Milan to the Alps takes about 2 hours, and from Rome to the national parks in the southโeven longer.
