Private beach, family pools and kids' clubs 🌊
Yes, Greece suits families well. The distances between the beach, the town, and the hotel are usually short, and in the summer, the sea is warm and calm. In the wind-sheltered coves where most resorts are located, even small children can swim without any problems. Tavernas serve food early, and children are warmly welcomed there. The menu at almost every restaurant includes grilled meat, chips, and simple pasta dishes.
Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu are ideal for family holidays, as they feature long sandy beaches and shallow waters, and many resorts are within a short transfer of the airport. If you’re looking for a destination on the mainland with sandy beaches backed by pine forests, choose Halkidiki. If you’re looking for a resort with flat terrain that’s easy to get around, you should choose Kos or Zakynthos. If you’re travelling with a buggy, it’s best to avoid Santorini and Mykonos for now.
The best times to visit are from late May through mid-June, as well as September: the water temperature is already quite high, and the daytime heat is quite bearable for children. July and August are the hottest months, and the beaches are at their most crowded; this period still suits family holidays, as it coincides with school breaks. That said, you’ll need to get up early in the morning, and siestas tend to last longer. April and October are relatively quiet, though depending on the resort, operating hours may be reduced.
If you want to enjoy a single island or resort, 7 nights is enough; for stays of 10 to 14 nights, you’ll also have plenty of time for boat trips, exploring ruins, and relaxing by the pool. When travelling around the islands with children, it’s easier to limit yourself to 2 islands connected by a direct ferry rather than visiting 3 or more islands.
Greek resort hotels offer various meal plans—ranging from room only to half-board and all-inclusive—so prices can vary significantly even within the same hotel, depending on the meal plan. Breakfast is usually served buffet-style, with a selection of pastries, yoghurt, fruit, eggs, and regional cheeses. Family rooms, double rooms with connecting doors, and studio rooms with a kitchenette are widely available.
In Greece, the cost of food and drinks, which is where family budgets usually go, is lower than in most tourist destinations in the western Mediterranean. Meals at a taverna, breakfast at a bakery, and snacks on the beach are cheaper than in Italy or the south of France. Prices do rise in August and on small islands, where everything arrives by boat, so you’ll be able to manage your budget more effectively if you plan your trip before or after the peak summer season.
