Yes, the U.S. is perfect for short city trips. After all, in the city centre areas of major cities, museums, restaurants, live music venues, and shops are all within walking distance of one another. New York, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C.—all of these cities are ideal for a 3- or 4-night stay. The public transportation network is most developed in the historic cities of the East Coast, whereas in West Coast cities, you often have to use a car or taxi to travel long distances.
New York is perfect for first-time visitors looking for galleries, theatres, and nonstop excitement, whereas Washington, D.C., is recommended for those who want to enjoy history and free museums. Couples tend to choose San Francisco, Charleston, or New Orleans if they’re looking for great food and an old city that’s easy to explore on foot. Orlando, San Diego, and Boston are recommended for families. Chicago combines architecture, long waterfronts, and a diverse restaurant scene, and is also more affordable compared to cities on the East and West Coasts.
In most U.S. cities, spring and autumn are the most pleasant times of the year: the days are warm, and hotel rates are lower than during the height of the summer season. For New York, Chicago, and Boston, the best times to visit are from April through early June, as well as from September through October. In southern cities such as Miami, New Orleans, and Phoenix, the most comfortable time to travel is from November through March, as the summer heat and humidity subside during this period.
Given the length of the flight from the UK and the time difference, you should plan a stay of 4 to 5 nights when visiting a city in the U.S. This way, you can first rest after arriving and then fully enjoy your three-day stay. If you want to visit 2 cities in one trip, you’ll need 7 to 10 nights; ideally, you should take short domestic flights or travel by train along the Northeast Corridor, which connects Washington, New York, and Boston.
At hotels in U.S. city centres, the base rate typically includes only the room; breakfast is either charged separately or, at mid-range chain hotels, offered as a simple buffet. Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and an in-room coffee maker are standard amenities. Many central hotels charge a daily destination or facility fee on a daily basis, which covers access to the gym and pool; in city centres, parking is almost always extra.
Since American cities are very spread out and taxi fares can be high, it’s recommended to choose accommodation in the city centre and near public transport stops. In New York, Midtown and Lower Manhattan are good options; in Chicago, the Loop and River North; and in New Orleans, the French Quarter and the Garden District. Prices for accommodation are, of course, lower farther from the city centre, but you should weigh the money you save against the time you’ll spend commuting each day.
