Art Deco style and rooftop views on Miami Beach
Yes, and it’s precisely this diversity that makes it so appealing. Whether it’s the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, the cool waves of the Pacific Ocean in California, the sandy beaches of the Barrier Islands in North and South Carolina, or the volcanic coastline of Hawaii—you can choose whatever best suits your preferences. Since water temperature, landscape, and the length of the swimming season vary greatly depending on the coastline, this country is ideal for both a short sunny holiday and a long touring trip.
Since beaches vary greatly in their characteristics, there is no single beach that is perfect for everyone. Along Florida’s Gulf Coast, there are beaches with fine, light-coloured sand and calm, shallow waters. In Hawaii, you can not only swim in warm ocean water but also go snorkelling right from the beach. Southern California attracts surfers and walkers more than swimmers. When choosing a beach, first think about your preferred sea conditions and then take into account how busy the surrounding towns are.
The coasts of Florida and Alabama along the Gulf of Mexico are particularly popular among families. This is because the water in this area remains shallow for a considerable distance from shore, and the waves are calm. Couples, on the other hand, tend to choose Hawaii, the California coast near Santa Barbara, or the small barrier islands in Georgia and South Carolina. Such places are relatively quiet and rarely have large resort complexes.
It depends on the specific coastline. In Florida and along the Gulf Coast, the weather is warm and dry from late winter through spring, whereas on the Atlantic coast north of North and South Carolina, it doesn’t get properly warm until the height of summer. On California’s beaches, the skies are clearest from late summer through early autumn. Hawaii is a great place to visit any time of year, though winter is the rainiest season.
Since room only is the standard in the US, breakfast is often paid for separately or served in the hotel café. Beach hotels usually have a pool, parking, and a gym, and many hotels in resort areas also provide lounge chairs and beach towels. As resort fees are common, check what is included in the price before booking.
Given the long flight from the UK, plan a stay of 7 to 10 nights at a coastal resort so you don’t spend half your trip travelling between locations. If you want to visit cities, national parks, or other Hawaiian islands, consider extending your stay to 10–14 nights. If you’re already there, a short visit of about 4 nights would be a more suitable option.
