Yes. Since most hotels in the Maldives are located on their own separate islands, during your stay you’ll usually eat, drink and swim within the grounds of the same resort. Because of this setup, dining options off the island are limited, so resorts here typically offer full-board or all-inclusive packages. That means meals are part of the package rather than an extra expense to budget for.
Since the islands offer much more variety than is described in the brochures, there is no best resort in the literal sense of the word. North Malé and South Malé atolls are closest to the airport and can be reached by speedboat in less than an hour. Baa and Raa atolls are usually reached by seaplane, but there you’ll be able to enjoy calmer waters. Make your choice based on how to get to the resort, the quality of the coastal reef, and whether you prefer a beachfront villa or an overwater villa.
Scattered throughout the outer atolls are secluded islands reserved exclusively for adults; it takes a little longer to get there, but you can enjoy peaceful nights there. For family holidays, try the larger islands in the North and South Malé Atolls are recommended. These islands feature kids’ clubs and shallow lagoons, and the trip there by speedboat takes very little time. Newlyweds often choose overwater villas with direct access to the lagoon. Travellers with young children generally prefer beachfront villas for safety and space.
From December through April, the dry season prevails here: the wind is gentle, the sea is crystal clear, and the weather is mostly stable and sunny. May through November is the rainy season (monsoon), though short, heavy downpours are more common than rain that lasts all day, and accommodation prices are more affordable during this period. Divers eagerly await the period from May through November, when plankton is abundant in the water, to watch manta rays and whale sharks.
Yes, 7 nights on the island is plenty; even factoring in travel time, you can plan a full-fledged holiday lasting 5 to 6 days. Since seaplanes fly only during the day, if your arrival time is inconvenient, you may end up losing most of the day both upon arrival and departure. Newlyweds often extend their stay to 10 nights and sometimes split it between 2 islands.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the main restaurant are included in the standard package, and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages, beer, wine, and spirits is available throughout the day. Package deals typically include snorkelling gear, kayaks and non-motorised water sports. Speciality restaurants, diving courses, spa treatments, fishing tours, and fine wines are not included in most package deals. The cost of a transfer by seaplane or speedboat is paid separately and can be quite high in some cases.
