Why we love it

The setting

This hotel is in Midtown Manhattan, about 3 km from central, on the border between the Theatre District and the Hell's Kitchen neighbourhood. It’s a lively neighbourhood that’s easy to explore on foot; it’s surrounded by Off-Broadway theatres, restaurants, and bars that stay open late into the night. With Underground lines running through Times Square and the Port Authority, you can quickly reach other parts of Manhattan, and there’s a lively atmosphere right outside the hotel until late at night.

What to expect

The compact and stylishly designed rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a desk, a safe, a TV, and a bathroom with a shower. The bar and restaurant are on the ground floor, so you can enjoy drinks and light meals without leaving the building. In addition, a fitness centre and gym are available for intense workouts. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and on-site parking is provided, making the hotel ideal for families with children.

Things to do nearby

The Playwrights Horizons theatre is just around the corner, and if you walk a little further down the street—where theatres are lined up one after another—you’ll also see the Westside Theatre and the Actors Studio. Since the Pearl Theatre is also nearby, it takes practically no time at all to get to the evening performances. On weekends, the hotel recommends taking a leisurely stroll to the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market flea market and browsing the stalls there in search of vintage items, vinyl records, and secondhand goods.

Best for

This hotel is ideal for theatre lovers, first-time visitors to New York, and couples looking to explore Midtown. Families are always welcome, and for solo travellers, the hotel offers compact, well-maintained rooms, a ground-floor bar, and a fitness centre where you can shake off the effects of jet lag.

How to get to the hotel

A taxi ride to JFK Airport takes about an hour, depending on traffic conditions. It usually takes 30–40 minutes to get to LaGuardia Airport and about 45 minutes to an hour to get to Newark al. You can also reach Newark al by train from Penn Station, just a short walk away. Since both the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the Times Square Underground station are within walking distance, transportation to various parts of the city is very convenient.

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and Midtown first look

After you check in and drop off your luggage, you head straight to the theatre district. After walking two or three blocks to Times Square, you’ll enjoy the classic spectacle of the neon signs on your first night, then have dinner while strolling along 9th Avenue past the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market neighbourhood. Don’t overdo it. Treat yourself to a slice of pizza and a beer at the hotel bar, and go to bed early before the jet lag really sets in.

Day 2

Off-Broadway and Hell's Kitchen

Spend the morning, take a stroll through the streets around Playwrights Horizons and the Actors Studio, check out the posters, and pick a show for the evening. After lunch at one of the cafes in the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market neighbourhood, head to the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market flea market and take your time browsing through vintage jackets, vinyl records, and rare finds that offer a glimpse into Manhattan’s history. After dinner, book tickets at the Westside Theatre or the Pearl Theatre.

Day 3

Central Park and museum mile

Set aside about two hours to walk through Columbus Circle to Central Park and take a leisurely stroll through the park, past the Bethesda Terrace and the Bow Bridge. Once you reach the Upper East Side, don’t try to visit all three museums—choose just one. Enjoy some coffee and pastries somewhere on Madison Avenue, and then stroll back along Fifth Avenue in the glow of the sunset.

Day 4

Downtown, High Line and Chelsea

Take the Underground to the Meatpacking District and stroll along the High Line from north to south, from one end to the other, making sure to stop at the viewing platforms overlooking the Hudson River. For lunch, stop by Chelsea Market and browse the food stalls. Spend the afternoon, explore the galleries in Chelsea, then head back to Uptown, find a cozy spot near your hotel to enjoy dinner, and round out the day with a pre-bedtime cocktail at the bar on the ground floor.

Day 5

Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO

In the morning, before it gets too crowded, head to City Hall and cross the Brooklyn Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, you can take a stroll through the DUMBO neighbourhood, snap some photos at popular photo spots near the Manhattan Bridge, and then head straight to Brooklyn Bridge Park to have lunch there by the water. Let’s take the ferry back to Manhattan and see the skyline from a different perspective. Before dinner, you can relax a bit at the fitness centre or the hotel bar.

Day 6

Museums, shopping or a boat

Enjoy the day at your own pace. Art lovers are encouraged to spend the morning at MoMA, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Shoppers enthusiasts should check out 5th Fifth Avenue or Bryant Park. When the weather is nice, you also recommend taking a cruise around Manhattan on a Circle Line boat and, while admiring the city’s skyline, taking a break from exploring the city.If the evening, you can catch an Off-Broadway show at Playwrights Horizons or the Pearl Theatre, and then enjoy a drink in the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market neighbourhood until late at night.

Day 7

Greenwich Village and food wandering

Take the subway to Washington Square Park and spend the day walking the Village, the West Village and SoHo. Cast-iron buildings, small bookshops, coffee stops, jazz posters. Have lunch at a tucked-away spot on Bleecker Street and pick up something to take home from a boutique on Broome or Spring. Head back uptown for a final dinner near the hotel and a farewell drink.

FAQ

Is New York worth the trip?

That's true. There's hardly another city that could offer so many interesting things in just one week. Broadway, Off-Broadway theatres such as Playwrights Horizons and the Actors Studio, Central Park, some of the world’s finest art museums, cuisine from around the globe, and views of the city skyline from bridges and rooftop terraces. Even those who have been there many times are constantly discovering new parts of the city, so on your first trip, you’ll only get to see a tiny fraction of all its charm.

Is $1000 enough for 4 days in New York?

If your lodging costs have already been paid, your budget will certainly be tight, but the hotel’ll manage somehow. If you eat at delis and simple restaurants, you should budget about $70–100 per day, plus about $35 for a weekly Underground pass, roughly $25–30 for a museum admission ticket, and about $40 for a ticket to an Off-Broadway show. If you avoid taxis and use the Underground instead, you can enjoy a full four-day holiday for $1,000.

Is it a good idea to travel to New York?

This place is perfect for city trips. There are regular flights from the UK, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to communicate in English. Plus, the period from late September to early October (which coincides with the dates of this trip) is one of the best times to travel, as it’s warm during the day and cool at night, and the summer humidity has subsided. If you book theatre tickets and tables at popular restaurants in advance, your trip will go off without a hitch.

What shouldn't you miss in New York?

Central Park, a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at least once, and an evening show—Off-Broadway theatres such as the Westside Theatre and the Pearl Theatre are right near the hotel. How about taking in the view from above (the Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, The Edge, etc.), try a slice of authentic pizza, and take a morning stroll—not one where you rush through three museums, but one where you leisurely explore a single, meaningful museum?

What are the top 5 things to do in New York?

Let the hotel suggest a few interesting activities for you. See a show on Broadway or at an Off-Broadway theatre near the hotel, take a stroll through Central Park from one end to the other, cross the Brooklyn Bridge and explore the DUMBO neighbourhood, spend half a day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art or MoMA, or fully indulge in the culinary delights of neighbourhoods like Hell's Kitchen Flea Market, the East Village, or Chinatown. Back at the hotel, the spa offers a place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
