Why we love it

The setting

Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa is on the shores of Lake Windermere, about 4 km from the city centre. The lake stretches right up to the resort’s doorstep, and the windows offer sweeping views of the surrounding hills. This 4-star resort hotel features not only a modern spa but also a swimming pool, a fitness centre, and opportunities for water sports, which guests can enjoy right from the hotel’s private dock. Guests arriving by car can use the parking lot free of charge. From here, you can easily explore the entire Lake District on foot, by boat, or with a short drive toward Ambleside to the north.

What to expect

What awaits you here is more of a full-fledged resort complex than a small country hotel. The spa and pool are the heart of a relaxing getaway, while the fitness centre and on-site water sports facilities will add a touch of activity to your trip. The rooms meet 4-star standards and offer magnificent views of the lake and the surrounding area. For families, there’s a game room and a children’s pool, which can be used even in bad weather. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and the bar, restaurant, and café are perfect for relaxing after a walk, a swim, or a day spent on the water.

Things to do nearby

The "Treetop Trek" adventure park is just a few minutes' walk along the lakefront. Also nearby is Block Hall (the Brockhole - the Lake District Visitor Centre), where you can enjoy gardens, walking trails, and family-friendly activities. Ambleside Pier is also nearby, where you can take a steamboat cruise on Lake Windermere. If you walk a little further along the lakeshore, you’ll see the Gothic tower of Wray Castle. Borrans Park, on the site of a Roman fort near Waterhead, is the perfect spot for a short stop and a picnic before you head back. This area is easy to explore on foot, by bike, or by boat on the lake.

Best for

Best for couples after a spa-and-lake weekend, walkers using Windermere as a base for the central fells, and families who want a pool, a playroom and watersports in one place. Drivers gain from free parking; anyone arriving by train at Windermere station has a short hop up the shore.

How to get to the hotel

This resort is about 4 km from the centre of Windermere, on the A591 on the eastern shore of the lake, between Windermere and Ambleside. If you’re arriving by car, it’s easily accessible from the M6 highway, and free parking is available on the hotel grounds. If you’re arriving by train, the nearest station is Windermere. From there, you can reach the hotel by taxi or bus after a short ride north along the lake shore.

Your 3 days, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival, spa and lake views

Park your car in the free parking lot and head straight to the spa to recharge after a tiring trip. Spend the rest of the afternoon in the pool or fitness centre, or read a book in a cozy, secluded corner. As the setting sun illuminates Lake Windermere and the light softens, take a stroll along the waterfront toward the Brockhole Visitor Centre, then head back, enjoy a cocktail at the bar, and savor dinner at the on-site restaurant.

Day 2

On and around the water

Start your day with a cup of strong coffee, and then book a sailboat trip, a surfing tour, or a motorboat ride on the lake with the resort’s water sports organizers. After about a 15-minute walk, you’ll reach the “Treetop Trek,” where you can experience a high-rope adventure among the treetops. In the afternoon, stroll to Ambleside Pier, board a steamboat heading south, and enjoy the ride while admiring the view of the rolling hills outside the window. On the way back, have an early dinner in Ambleside, then walk back.

Day 3

Castles, parks and a slow finish

Cross the lake in a small boat and head to Wray Castle, where you can spend the morning exploring the Gothic-style halls and the grounds along the lake. Return via Borrans Park and have a picnic near the ancient Roman ruins at Waterhead. Before leaving, set aside about an hour to stroll through the Blockhall Gardens, and to round out your stay at the resort, enjoy a swim or a sauna one last time. Grab a coffee for the road and hit the road, admiring the lake’s reflection in your rearview mirror.

FAQ

Is it a good choice for families with children?

Yes. This hotel is marketed as “the perfect choice for families with children” and features a playroom as well as its own children’s pool, so even on rainy days, young children can really let off some steam here. Both the “Treetop Trek” and the “Brockhole - the Lake District Visitor Centre” are within walking distance and cater primarily to families.

What is there to do on site?

The range of activities is quite extensive. In addition to the pool, fitness centre, and gym, guests at the hotel can take advantage of the resort’s water sports facilities on Lake Windermere (sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, motorboat rides, etc.). In addition to the golf course directly adjacent to the resort, there are bars, restaurants, and cafes where you can relax between meetings.

When is the best time to visit?

Late July is one of the best times to visit the Lake District, provided you book your trip for this specific period. Dusk lasts longer, the water temperature is perfect for sailing and paddleboarding, and the hills (fell) are covered in lush greenery at this time of year. Since large crowds of tourists are expected along the waterfront on weekends, the hotel recommends going for walks and taking steamboat rides in the morning, and saving the afternoon for relaxing at the spa or by the pool.

Can you walk to nearby attractions from the hotel?

Yes. Treetop Trek is under a kilometre away, Brockhole Visitor Centre is just over a kilometre along the shore, and Ambleside Pier is around a twenty-minute walk for steamer connections across the lake. Wray Castle and Borrans Park are a short drive or boat ride further on.
