Why we love it

The setting

in the London's Docklands area of East London, about 9 kilometres from the city centre, this hotel is an ideal base for travellers seeking a peaceful place to stay while still having easy access to the city centre. The surrounding area features a mix of restored port facilities and new riverside developments, while nearby Bow Creek offers guests a spacious green space. The rooms are decorated in the simple and practical style of the 3-star Travelodge chain and are designed to ensure you get a good night’s rest before starting a new day in the capital.

What to expect

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and in addition to the pool and fitness centre, the property also features a bar and restaurant that you can enjoy on evenings when you don’t feel like going out into the city. A shuttle service is also provided. Rates for room-only stays are affordable, and you’re free to choose where to dine: at the hotel restaurant, at a curry house in Whitechapel, or at a restaurant on a boat near Billingsgate.

Things to do nearby

Bow Creek Ecology Park is right nearby—an area of wetlands and wildflowers—and it’s hard to believe it’s located right next to Canary Wharf. Trinity Buoy Wharf, home to a lighthouse and studios converted from shipping containers, is just a short walk along the waterfront. Billingsgate Market and the historic St. St Matthias Old Church are also nearby, and a little further away is Ravensbourne University London, so you can easily combine a visit to the campus with this walk.

Best for

This hotel is in a quiet neighbourhood in East London and features a pool and a gym. It’s ideal for couples and solo travellers who don’t mind a short subway ride to the city centre. It’s also a good choice for business travellers planning to visit the O2 Arena, the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, or the Canary Wharf area.

How to get to the hotel

From Heathrow Airport, take the Elizabeth Line to Canary Wharf station, and from there, transfer to the DLR to reach the nearest station, Canning Town. From City Airport, it’s just a short ride on the DLR. From Gatwick and Stansted, the Tube and DLR via central London are the easiest way in.

Your 3 days, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Docklands on foot

Drop off your luggage and head straight to Bow Creek Ecology Park for a leisurely stroll along the waterfront. From there, continue on to Trinity Buoy Wharf and check out London’s only lighthouse, as well as the nearby shipping container studios. After lunch at a waterfront café, take the DLR about two stops west and spend the rest of the afternoon at Canary Wharf. Once back at the hotel, you can go for another swim before dinner at the restaurant to round out the day on a pleasant note.

Day 2

Markets and old stones

Set an early alarm for Billingsgate Market, where the action winds down by mid-morning but the atmosphere is worth the bleary eyes. Walk over to St Matthias Old Church afterwards for a quieter half hour among the gravestones and trees. Spend the rest of the day in central London — South Bank, Borough Market, a gallery — then return east for a gym session and a drink at the bar before bed.

Day 3

Maritime Greenwich by river

In the morning, consider heading to Greenwich on the Thames Clipper ferry or the DLR train. After boarding the Cutty Sark, take a stroll through Greenwich Park to the Royal Observatory and stand on the Prime Meridian. Admission to the National Maritime Museum is free, and consider having lunch at the market. Once you return to the area around your hotel, you can easily reach Canary Wharf and the O2 Arena—the perfect spots for an evening stroll.

FAQ

Is it a good base for families?

Since the hotel has its own pool, it’s particularly well-suited for families looking for a more peaceful setting than central London. Although the hotel has a pool, a fitness centre, and a restaurant, there is no mention of a dedicated kids’ club or playground, so it’s recommended to plan daytime activities elsewhere.

When is the best time to visit London?

Early July, which is when this trip falls, is one of the better windows. Days are long, parks are full, and outdoor spots like Bow Creek Ecology Park and Trinity Buoy Wharf are at their best. Pack for warm afternoons and the occasional summer shower.

How far is the hotel from central London?

This hotel is in the Docklands area, about 9 kilometres from the city centre. On the DLR line from Canning Town station, you can quickly reach Bank and Tower Hill stations, and on the Jubilee line from Canning Town station, you can reach London Bridge and Westminster stations in less than 15 minutes without changing trains.

Is there somewhere to eat at the hotel?

Yes, this hotel has its own bar and restaurant, which is very convenient if you’ve spent the whole day travelling and don’t want to go out again. Breakfast is included in the price in your rate plan, but you’ll have the option to decide for yourself whether you want to eat at the hotel or try the food at local restaurants.
