How to get to the hotel
The nearest major airport is Manchester, located about a two-hour drive north on the M6. The nearest train station on the West Coast Main Line is Penrith, which can be reached by car or taxi in about 30 minutes. Some guests take the bus to Keswick and then transfer to a local taxi from there. If you’re arriving by car, take Exit 40 off the M6, follow the A66 toward Keswick, and then take the B5289 along the lake.

Arrive on the lakeshore
Once you’ve driven along the A66 and checked into your hotel, you should take an immediate stroll to Derwentwater to unwind after your journey. Take a 30-minute walk along the lakeside trail heading north, or cross the road and walk toward Ashness Bridge to enjoy your first view of the Fells mountain range. Then return to the hotel, have dinner at the restaurant, and spend a quiet evening watching the changing reflections of light on the water’s surface.
Borrowdale walks and a boat on the lake
Make the most of your day in the Lake District. You can either set out early in the morning on foot along the hiking trail near the hotel in Borrowdale, or drive a short distance to Catbells to hike the popular mountain trail there, which offers magnificent views of Derwentwater. Have lunch at a café in Grange or Rosthwaite, and in the afternoon, cross the lake on the “Keswick Launch” boat and return to the hotel in time for dinner.
Keswick morning and slow drive home
Spend the morning in Keswick, which is about a 10-minute walk upstream from the lake. Stop by an outdoor gear shop, stroll through the market square on market days, or enjoy a cup of coffee near the pier. On your way south, it’s worth stopping at the “Surprise View” overlook above Ashness to take one last look at Derwentwater before turning onto the A66.If you have time, before heading onto the highway, you can take a short detour to Grasmere and buy some gingerbread there.

Yes. The hotel is at the entrance to Borrowdale, and hiking trails begin right next to it. In addition, Catbells, Ashness Bridge, and the Dervent Water lakeside promenade are all easily accessible. It’s the perfect spot for hikers who want to enjoy both mountain hikes and lakeside walks without having to drive long distances.
Can families with children stay here?
Families are welcome. It's a family-run Lake District hotel with grounds to wander, the lake shore close by and Derwentwater launch trips for a gentle day out. Older children who enjoy walking will get the most from a stay, given the setting in Borrowdale.
Is mid-August a good time to visit the Lake District?
August is one of the liveliest and hottest months in the Lake District. The days are long and perfect for hiking in the mountains and boating on Derwentwater. Enjoy the lush greenery of the surrounding area and the lively atmosphere of Keswick. With schools on summer break, the region will be especially busy. The hotel therefore recommend that you book restaurant tables and tickets for boat tours in advance.
Is there a restaurant on site?
