Why we love it
The setting
In Jukkasjärvi — a small village on the bank of the Torne River in Swedish Lapland, some 200 km north of the Arctic Circle — you'll find ICEHOTEL. Every winter the hotel gets rebuilt from river ice and snow, so the cold suites you sleep in only last the season. Outside, the landscape is forest, frozen water and open sky, with Kiruna Airport about 11 km away for easy arrival.
What to expect
You stay in a handcrafted ice suite where the walls, the bed base and much of the furniture are carved from ice and snow. Beds are dressed with thermal sleeping bags and reindeer hides, and the temperature inside holds at around minus 5 degrees. The site keeps warm facilities too, including heated bathrooms, a sauna and changing rooms, plus the on-site Icebar. The standard rate is room only, so meals are arranged separately at the restaurant or bar.
Things to do nearby
Jukkasjärvi works as a base for Arctic winter activities. Many guests join northern lights tours after dark, since the village sits well inside the aurora zone. Daytime options in the surrounding area include skiing, marked hiking trails and ice fishing on the frozen river. Kiruna town, the regional hub, is a short drive away and home to the airport that most visitors use to reach the area.
Best for
Couples and travellers after a one-off Arctic stay, who want the ice suite experience plus warm facilities on the same site. Best suited to those happy to dress for the cold at night.
