Your 6 days, loosely planned
Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.
Arrival and settling in
Once you've checked in and dropped off your luggage, why not take a stroll through the streets around the hotel to soak up the atmosphere of the neighbourhood? When you return to the hotel, stop by the café for a cup of coffee, and then enjoy a relaxed dinner at the restaurant. If you’re travelling by car, park first, then talk to the concierge about the places you’d like to visit in the coming days to plan your excursions.
Central Makkah on foot
In the morning, take a stroll through central Mecca, which is within walking distance of the hotel. Take your time wandering through the bustling streets, observe the daily life of the locals, and pop into the small shops along the way. Head back to the hotel in the late afternoon, relax at a café, and then, as soon as the temperature cools down a bit in the evening, head out again. Spend the day with dinner at the hotel restaurant.
Excursion day
Let the hotel staff take care of all the arrangements so you can enjoy your tour to the fullest. When you return to the hotel in the late afternoon, relax with a glass of your favourite drink at the bar; in the evening, have a light dinner at the hotel restaurant and go to bed early.
Shopping and street life
Give the day over to browsing. Walk from the hotel into the surrounding streets and see what catches your eye, from small souvenirs to gifts to bring home. Stop for lunch at a local café when you fancy a rest. Late afternoon, drop your purchases back at the room, freshen up, then return to the restaurant or venture out to try somewhere new nearby.
Slower pace and reflection
Take a gentler day. The café is a good spot to settle for an hour with a coffee and watch the world go by. In the evening, ask the concierge for a quieter local recommendation, or stay in and enjoy the on-site bar and restaurant.
Last look and departure
Take advantage of the morning of your last day to enjoy everything you haven’t had a chance to do yet. Take one last stroll through central, have a coffee at a café, or quickly pick up a few souvenirs—spend the morning however you’d like. When you’re ready, please check out. If you arrived by car, please pick it up from the hotel parking lot. Guests continuing their journey to Jeddah can arrange a transfer through the concierge before departure.

FAQ
How expensive is it to visit Mecca?
Prices vary greatly depending on the season; during Ramadan and the Hajj, hotel and airfare prices reach their peak. Outside of these periods, mid-range hotels, such as the IHG-affiliated “voco Makkah,” are relatively inexpensive, and daily expenses for taxis, cafes, and meals on-site also remain affordable. If you want to explore the surrounding area in detail, you should set aside a little extra in your budget for a private driver or guided tours.
Are Jews allowed to enter Mecca?
Access to Mecca is restricted to Muslims only. Saudi authorities do not permit non-Muslims, regardless of their origin, to enter the holy city, and this rule is strictly enforced at checkpoints on the roads leading to Mecca. Travellers of other faiths instead visit Jeddah, the suburbs of Medina, or other cities in Saudi Arabia. In these places, hotels and attractions are open to all visitors.
Can you touch the Black Stone of Mecca?
Traditionally, pilgrims try to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad and, during the tawaf, touch the Black Stone du or kiss it. However, since there are usually so many people around the Kaaba that they often cannot even get close to it, most pilgrims simply raise their hand and point in that direction from a distance; this is also considered a perfectly acceptable action.
What do people do in Mecca?
Many pilgrims come for Umrah or Hajj and focus primarily on praying at the Masjid al-Haram, performing the tawaf around the Kaaba, and the sa'i between Safa and Marwah. In between the rituals, they relax at the hotel, dine at local restaurants, buy souvenirs and dates, or visit historical sites in the city and its surroundings. The staff at the voco Makkah by IHG hotel’s tour desk will be happy to help you arrange excursions.
What is Mecca famous for?
Mecca is the holiest city in Islam and also the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad. It is home to the Masjid al-Haram, which surrounds the Kaaba—the direction toward which all Muslims face during their daily prayers. Every year, millions of pilgrims visit this site as part of the Hajj or Umrah, making it one of the world’s most significant religious sites with the highest number of visitors.
