Why we love it

The setting

The hotel is on a cliff overlooking Praia do Vale Covo Beach, and the cove is just a minute’s walk away. Since the centre of Carvoeiro and the promenade are also just a few minutes’ walk away, you can enjoy a relaxing stay even without a car—by the pool, on the sandy beach, or with a drink at sunset. This 5-star hotel boasts an excellent location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, offering panoramic ocean views from virtually anywhere on the property.

What to expect

With a pool, free Wi-Fi throughout the building, and on-site parking for guests arriving by car, this is a quiet, secluded retreat for adults in the Algarve. The rooms are furnished with high-quality furniture and amenities, as befits a 5-star hotel, and the common areas offer breathtaking views of the sea stretching out at the foot of the cliff. A day here is very simple: the beach, the pool, a walk to Carvoeiro—and then start all over again.

Things to do nearby

Praia do Vale Covo Beach is right below the hotel, and a short walk along the cliffs will take you to Vale Covo Beach. Nearby is also the Tivoli Carvoeiro Beach Boardwalk promenade, which connects the individual coves via a walking path and leads to Tivoli Carvoeiro Beach Boardwalk’s main beach, as well as the town’s restaurants and bars. If you’d like to head to another cove in the afternoon, you can enjoy a slightly longer walk to Praia do Paraíso. This is one of the best areas in the Algarve where you can reach the beaches on foot, without needing a car.

Best for

Couples and families after a five-star Algarve base with the beach on the doorstep. Children get a playground, kids' pool and kids' club, so parents get genuine downtime by the main pool or out on the boardwalk.

How to get to the hotel

It takes about an hour to drive from Faro Airport to this town via the A22 highway heading west. In the arrivals area, you can rent a car or arrange a private transfer through your hotel. Carvoeiro itself is a small town and easy to get around on foot, so a car will be most useful for day trips along the coast.

Stunning location and views but with a few niggles

The location and views of this hotel is its greatest selling point. Hotel is immaculately maintained and the bed rooms are made up early each morning. Fabulous smell… Read full review on ZenHotels →

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and the cove below

Once you’ve settled in and unpacked your things, you should head straight down to Praia do Vale Covo Beach and catch your first glimpse of the ocean. This cove is small, and the waves here are calm, making it ideal for a relaxing swim after your flight. Then enjoy a drink by the pool and have dinner at a seafood restaurant near Carvoeiro’s main beach.

Day 2

Boardwalk and Carvoeiro town

In the morning, consider taking a walk along the Carvoeiro waterfront toward the east and crossing the wooden bridge that stretches along the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Beyond it lies the centre of Carvoeiro, where you can browse the shops, try some pastéis de nata, and watch the fishing boats. Spend the afternoon at Carvoeiro Beach and head back along the coastal trail as the sun begins to set.

Day 3

Pool day and sunset drinks

Let’s allow yourself to “do practically nothing” at least once. Let’s grab a lounge chair by the pool early, enjoy reading a good book for a couple of hours, and order a refreshing drink as noon approaches. When the heat subsides, take a walk to Vale Covo Beach, go for a swim in the sea, take a long shower, and then head to a bar to watch the sunset. Since the nights in July remain warm even after 9:00 p.m., there’s no need to rush.

Day 4

Paraiso Beach and cliff walks

Follow the trail along the cliffs westward toward Carvoeiro Beach. Along the way, stop at the lookout points to enjoy the view in a peaceful setting. The descent to the sandy beach is quite steep, but it’s definitely worth the effort. In the morning, the sea is usually crystal clear, and the waves are calm. Don’t forget to bring a hat and plenty of water. Return to the hotel for lunch, head from the beach to the pool, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon under a beach umbrella.

Day 5

Boat trip along the coast

Book a morning boat from Carvoeiro to see the Benagil sea caves and the limestone arches that define this stretch of coast. The trips leave from Carvoeiro Beach, ten minutes' walk from the hotel. You'll be back by lunch with a memory card full of photos. Eat in town, then nap off the sea air before a late dinner at a clifftop restaurant.

Day 6

Slow morning, market afternoon

Linger over breakfast, then take a longer pool session while the sun is high. In the afternoon, drive or taxi up to Lagoa or Porches for a poke around the ceramics shops and a coffee somewhere shaded. Come back in time for a swim at Vale Covo Beach, then book a table in Carvoeiro for grilled fish and a glass of vinho verde.

Day 7

Last swim and slow departure

On your last morning, you planned to go for one last swim at Praia do Vale Covo Beach, and then enjoy a leisurely breakfast on the terrace. Take your time packing your bags, check them in at the front desk, and take one last stroll along the boardwalk to enjoy the view. Stop briefly in town for a cup of coffee, pick up a few small souvenirs, and then, with a pleasant sense of having had a truly relaxing holiday, head home.

FAQ

Is it a good choice for families?

Yes. The hotel has a children's playground, a kids' swimming pool and a kids' club, so younger guests have somewhere of their own to play while parents use the main pool. Praia do Vale Covo just below the hotel is sheltered and easy for children to swim in.

When is the best time to visit Carvoeiro?

A trip in July coincides with the peak of the summer season in the Algarve, when it’s not only consistently hot and dry, but the sea temperature also reaches its highest point. You should expect large crowds on the beaches and along the boardwalks. If you prefer a quieter off-season, you should choose late May, June, or September—then, although it will be a bit cooler, there will also be fewer people.

Is there parking at the hotel?

Yes, there are parking spaces on the hotel grounds that hotel guests can use for free. So you’ll have no problem renting a car if you want to visit Benagil, Lagoa, or the villages located further inland. Most of Carvoeiro’s beaches and restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel.

How close is the nearest beach?

Praia do Vale Covo Beach, located right below the hotel, is the closest beach for swimming. You can reach Vale Covo Beach after a short walk along the cliffs, and by strolling along the Tivoli Carvoeiro Beach Boardwalk promenade, you can leisurely walk to Tivoli Carvoeiro Beach Boardwalk’s main beach and Praia do Paraíso.
