The setting
This resort is on Palmar Beach on the east coast of Mauritius, about one kilometre from the centre of the nearest village. With its turquoise sea, vast casuarina forests, and tranquil coastline dotted with low-rise buildings, the atmosphere here is more serene than lively and party-oriented. Of course, you can walk for many miles along the sandy beach, but to reach the shops and villages further along the coast, itβs more convenient to use a rental car or a taxi.
What to expect
A 4-star beach resort with a swimming pool, spa, sauna and massage room, plus a bar and restaurant on site. Sports options run wide: water park, water sports, snorkelling and diving, table tennis, tennis and a golf course, with a fitness room for gym days. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there's free parking if you're driving.
Things to do nearby
Palmar Beach is literally right on your doorstep and is one of the long, snow-white sandy beaches along the east coast; the sea, protected by coral reefs, is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Right nearby is the Belle Mare district, where you can enjoy lovely walks along the beach. By car, you can quickly reach Γle aux Selfs, the lagoons around Trou de lβObe, and the waterfalls located deep within the island.

Itβs perfect for couples looking to spend a relaxing week at the beach, as well as for families who want their children to have plenty of fun right on the hotel grounds. For children, there is a playroom, a playground, and a separate pool, while parents can book massages and spa treatments. For sports enthusiasts, the hotel offers diving, snorkeling, tennis, table tennis, and a golf course. The hotelβs spacious grounds are also a great place to relax on a lounge chair and soak up the sun.
How to get to the hotel

The drive along the coast to Belle Mare de takes about 45β60 minutes (depending on traffic conditions). A week, loosely planned
Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.
Arrival and first toes in the lagoon
Upon arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International, board the shuttle bus and enjoy the ride to the Belle Mare. Check-in begins at 3:00 p.m. After youβve unpacked your luggage in a relaxed atmosphere, head straight to Palmar Beach to leave the stresses of your flight behind. Settle into a comfortable lounge chair, splash around in the shallow lagoon, and admire the beauty of the sunset. After dinner at the resortβs restaurant and an early nightβs rest, youβll be fully ready for your week-long holiday.
Palmar Beach and pool day
Spend a peaceful and relaxing day. After enjoying a late breakfast, take a seat by the pool and, if youβd like, head to the sandy beach. Thanks to the coral reef, the water here is calm, so you can swim to your heartβs content. You also recommend renting snorkeling gear, available on the hotel grounds, to see what marine life lives beyond the drop-off. Order a drink at the bar, read a book for about an hour, and repeat this until sunset.
Ile aux Cerfs boat trip
Book a boat trip to Γle aux Selfsβa popular destination on the east coast. The boat departs from the βTrou de lβEau Douceβ pier, located right on the coast, and the view alone as you cruise through the lagoon is worth the price of admission. Spend the day surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear, turquoise-blue shallow waters, and enjoy lunch at one of the beach huts on the island. There are also tours that stop at the GRSE waterfalls on the way backβjust ask about them.
Water sports and the on-site water park
Use what's on the doorstep. The resort has water sport facilities, a water park and diving, so pick your pace: a proper dive if you're certified, a discovery session if you aren't, or an afternoon of kayaks and pedalos in the lagoon. Snorkelling straight off the beach is the easy option. Finish with table tennis before dinner, or a sauna session to loosen shoulders.
Inland to waterfalls and tea country
Rent a car or hire a driver and head inland to the Central Plateau. The trip to Chamarel will take a whole day, but the view of the βseven-coloured earthβ and Chamarel Waterfall is definitely worth the effort. The road leading up the Black River Valley also offers picturesque scenery. A little closer to you is the βTea Routeβ around Bois Cheriβa short, half-day tour during which you can also enjoy a tea tasting. If you plan to stop by the river on the way back, donβt forget to bring your swimming gear.
Tennis, golf and a slower afternoon
How about booking a tennis court in the morning, while the air is still cool, or playing a round of golf and enjoying the course? If you don't play golf, you can get a good workout at the gym. In the afternoon, itβs time to relax. Treat yourself to a massage at the spa, visit the sauna, and then take a dip in the pool. How about dinner at the resortβs restaurant and a glass of rum at the bar while watching the moon rise over the lagoon?
Port Louis and market day
How about a trip to the capital to take your mind off things for a bit? Port Louis is about an hourβs drive across the island and is perfect for a half-day trip. There, you can visit the Central Market with its spices, fruits, and vanilla, stroll along the Aapravasi Ghat waterfront, and have lunch at the restaurant βLe Caudanβ by the harbour. On the way back, you can drive along the coastal road and take a dip in Belle Mare before dinner. Donβt forget to stock up on small bills for shopping at the market stalls.

FAQ
Where is Mauritius Island?
Out in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,000 km east of the African mainland, Mauritius is an island nation off Africa's south-eastern coast. East of Madagascar β and, alongside RΓ©union and Rodrigues, part of the Mascarene Islands archipelago.
How big is Mauritius Island?
The main island of Mauritius has an area of about 1,865 square kilometres and stretches about 65 kilometres from north to south and about 45 kilometres from east to west. Since the drive takes less than two hours, itβs entirely possible to organise a day trip from Belle Mare on the east coast.
Where is Mauritius Island located?
Mauritius is in the south-western Indian Ocean, about 900 kilometres east of Madagascar and 2,000 kilometres off the coast of the African continent. Since the island lies south of the equator, at a latitude of about 20 degrees south, and is thus entirely within the tropics, it has high sea temperatures year-round.
What are the best things to do in Mauritius?
Beach and lagoon time is the headline: swimming, snorkelling and diving along reef-protected coasts like Belle Mare. Boat trips to Ile aux Cerfs, hikes in Black River Gorges, the Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel and Port Louis market fill out a week. At the resort you've got a water park, water sports, tennis, table tennis and a golf course.
When is the best time to visit Mauritius?
The period from late July through August, when this tour takes place, corresponds to the dry winter season in Mauritius. The air is cool, humidity is low, and the weather is consistently sunny. This is one of the most pleasant times of the year to relax on the beach, go snorkeling, or take excursions into the interior of the island; however, southeasterly trade winds may pick up in the afternoon.
