Why we love it

The setting

Heritage Le Telfair is in Bel Ombre on the southern coast of Mauritius, about one kilometre from the town centre. It is situated in a quiet, green setting: behind the hotel lie sugarcane fields and the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve, while a long white-sand beach stretches out in front of the hotel. During the day, time passes at a leisurely pace, and in the evening, rather than a noisy party atmosphere, a calm and relaxed ambiance prevails—ideal for couples and families seeking peace and relaxation.

What to expect

This 5-star colonial-style resort features a spa, a sauna and steam room, as well as extensive sports facilities—ranging from tennis and table tennis to a fitness centre and a diving club. The resort has a bar and a restaurant, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. If you rent a car, parking spaces are available. Thanks to the kids’ club, game room, playground, and children’s pool, parents can enjoy the spa without any worries.

Things to do nearby

The Bel Ombre grounds extend around the hotel; the 18-hole championship-class golf course is just a few minutes away by golf cart, and hiking trails in the nature reserve are also nearby. The village of Belle Ombre, with its small shops, is just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel gates. “Case-Noir” and the pristine south-western lagoon in Le Morne are just a few minutes’ drive away along the coast, where you can go snorkeling and kitesurfing.

Best for

It’s perfect for couples looking to spend a week at the spa, for golfers who want to play at the Bel Ombre course, and for families who need a well-equipped kids’ club, a game room, a playground, and a children’s pool while the adults enjoy a massage. This place is also perfect for divers and snorkelers: there’s a diving club on the hotel grounds, and you can swim among the coral reefs right on the beach. The leisurely pace of life here is also perfect for those travelling alone who want to relax in a peaceful setting.

How to get to the hotel

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, near Plaisance, is about a 45-minute drive from Belle Ombre along the road that runs along the southern coast — this is the shortest route among Mauritius’s main resort areas. Upon booking, the hotel can arrange a private transfer for you. If you plan to rent a car at the airport and explore the south or west coast on your own, parking spaces are available on the hotel grounds.

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and the long beach

Once you arrive in Plaisance, follow the coastal road west toward Bel Ombre. After checking in and dropping off your luggage, consider taking a barefoot stroll along the beach in front of the hotel to soak up the atmosphere of this place. Order a refreshing drink at the bar, then return to the hotel to enjoy a cozy dinner at the restaurant. Go to bed early. The flight to Mauritius was long, and tomorrow the coastal coral reef awaits you.

Day 2

Reef swims and pool time

Bring your mask and fins and head straight out from the beach to go snorkeling. Since the lagoon here is shallow and the waves are calm, it’s perfect for spotting parrotfish and squid, which sometimes come to the surface. After you’ve dried off by the poolside while reading a book, if you’re travelling with your family, you can take the kids to the kids’ club after lunch. Book a massage at the spa later in the evening and end the day with a “Sundowner” cocktail while enjoying the ocean view.

Day 3

Bel Ombre golf day

Play a round on the Heritage Golf Club course that wraps around the estate — 18 holes with sugar-cane fairways, mountain backdrops and the sea in view on several tees. Non-golfers can borrow a bike and follow the estate trails through the reserve instead. Regroup at the hotel for lunch, then flop by the pool. Evening: table tennis tournament with the kids.

Day 4

Nature reserve hike

Take a tour of the “Bel Ombre” Nature Reserve, located behind the hotel, take a guided walk through the forest, home to endemic species, and climb up to the observation deck, which offers a sweeping view of the southern coast. If you’re lucky, you might spot a Mauritius forest falcon or a pink pigeon. Don’t forget to bring water and comfortable walking shoes. In the afternoon, return to the resort, take a dip in the ocean, and before dinner, set aside some time to visit the sauna and steam room.

Day 5

Diving and the south-west

How about joining a local diving club and enjoying a morning dive on the outer reef? The drop-off here is gentler than in the north of the island. If you don’t want to get wet, drive to Case Noyale or Le Morne and have lunch at one of the beach cafés there while admiring the view of the lagoon. The sunset on the Le Morne Peninsula is worth setting aside about 30 extra minutes for before heading back east for dinner.

Day 6

Chamarel and the south

A Day in the Heart of the Island: Head to Chamarel, visit the lookout points overlooking the “seven-coloured earth” and waterfalls, and enjoy a tour of a rum distillery with a tasting. Have lunch at a restaurant in the village serving Creole cuisine—the menu includes, for example, palm heart salad or squid in curry. On the way back, you’ll drive past a viewpoint in the Black River Gorges. In the evening at the hotel, after a relaxing yoga session or a swim, you can enjoy a cozy dinner on the terrace.

Day 7

Spa day, properly

Give the spa a full run today. Book a longer treatment, use the sauna and steam bath, then float in the pool with a book. Kids can bounce between the playroom, the playground and the children's pool with the club team. Late afternoon, try a tennis lesson or a fitness class in the gym. Dress up a little for dinner — it's your last-but-one night.

FAQ

Is the resort suitable for children?

Yes. The Heritage Le Telfair hotel features a kids’ club, a playroom with staff to supervise the children, a children’s playground, and a separate children’s pool, so even the youngest guests will be in good hands. Family suites are also available, and the shallow lagoon right on the beach is so calm that even children who can already swim confidently can play there without any worries.

What is there to do on site besides the beach?

Plenty. Guests can use water sports facilities, a diving club and snorkelling gear, plus a tennis court, table tennis, a gym and fitness facilities. Golfers have the Bel Ombre 18-hole course on the estate. The spa adds a sauna, steam bath and massage room for quieter afternoons.

Is August a good time to visit Mauritius?

August falls in the Mauritian winter — dry, sunny and cooler, with daytime highs around 24°C and low humidity. It's one of the most comfortable months for golf, hiking in the nature reserve and long beach days. The south-east trade winds pick up, which is great for kitesurfers over near Le Morne.

Is there a golf course at the hotel?

Yes. The Heritage Golf Club is on the grounds of the Bel Ombre and features an 18-hole tournament-quality course with views of the ocean and mountains. Guests of the at the resort have priority access to the course and can book tee times and golf carts through the front desk.

Does the hotel have a spa?

That's right. The wellness centre includes a spa, massage rooms, a sauna, and a steam room. Treatments can be combined with yoga classes and visits to the gym, which is ideal for guests who book the resort not so much for a pure beach holiday as, first and foremost, for a wellness week.
