Why we love it
The setting
Taj Exotica sits on its own island in South Malé Atoll, ringed by a shallow lagoon that runs through every shade of blue. The resort is a short speedboat transfer from Malé, so you trade the airport for water and quiet within the hour. Overwater villas line a curved wooden jetty above the reef, while beach villas back onto soft white sand and palms. There are 62 rooms in total, which keeps the island calm. Days here are built around the water, the spa and slow meals rather than a packed schedule.
What to expect
The overwater villa opens straight onto the lagoon, with steps from the deck down into the water and a private pool facing the horizon. Inside, the room is wide and bright, with a king bed, a deep stone bath and an open-air shower. Rooms are booked on a room-only basis, so you choose where and when to eat across the island's restaurants, bars and the overwater dining deck. Snorkelling off the house reef, diving and other water sports are run from the on-site club. The pace is deliberately unhurried.
Things to do nearby
The island itself is the main draw, so most of your time stays on the property. The house reef and private beach are steps from the villas, and the dive club arranges trips out into the atoll. Malé International Airport is about 11 km away across the water, which is also your arrival and departure point by speedboat. Beyond the resort, the wider South Malé Atoll has well-known dive and snorkel sites reachable by boat. Day excursions can be arranged through the resort if you want to leave the island.
Best for
This stay suits couples after a quiet, water-facing escape with space and privacy. The overwater villa, private pool and spa make it a strong choice for a honeymoon or a milestone trip. It works best for travellers happy to slow down rather than sightsee.

Your 5 days, loosely planned
Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.
Speedboat arrival
Arrive into Malé and transfer by speedboat to the island, watching the lagoon change colour on the way. Settle into the overwater villa, then take a first swim straight off the deck. End the day with dinner as the sky turns.
House reef morning
Spend the morning on the house reef with a mask and fins, looking for reef fish over the coral. After lunch, claim a lounger by your private pool and let the afternoon drift. A sunset drink on the deck closes things out.
Dive trip and spa
Book a guided dive or snorkel trip through the on-site club to reach sites further into the atoll. Back on the island, unwind with a treatment at the overwater spa. Dinner at the overwater dining deck makes the most of the view.
Water sports and lagoon
Try a water sport from the club, or simply move between the beach and the lagoon. Set aside time for a long, slow lunch and a nap. In the evening, arrange a private candlelit dinner if you want to mark the trip.
Last morning swim
Take one last swim from the villa before breakfast and pack at your own pace. A morning walk along the beach is a good send-off. Transfer back to Malé by speedboat for your onward flight.
