Why we love it

The setting

This resort is on the quiet island of Meemu Atoll and is one of two resorts on this atoll. Compared to busier atolls, it is characterized by a leisurely pace of life and less noise. The sandy beach is surrounded by coconut palms and lush, blooming tropical flowers, and the coastline is lapped by a turquoise lagoon. The villas feature a private sun deck and an udoli—a traditional Maldivian rocking chair—from which you can enjoy the view of the waves.

What to expect

Days here follow the rhythm of Island Time. Since the spa is built on stilts over the lagoon, you can hear the sound of the waves beneath your feet during treatments. The restaurant floor is covered with sand, creating an atmosphere so characteristic of the Maldives. Every evening, there’s a varied entertainment program featuring DJs, karaoke, Asian dance shows, movie screenings under the starry sky, and performances by the Bodu Beru drummers. To enjoy a special evening on the sandy beach, you can also arrange for a dinner on the beach under the stars.

Things to do nearby

Since this atoll is situated in a secluded location, most recreational activities take place on the island itself or in its immediate vicinity. The house reef is right off the shore, so you can snorkel right from the beach. In addition, the dive centre organizes excursions to the extensive reefs of Meemu Atoll. In the afternoon, activities include sunset fishing and water sports. Since the two overwater lagoon suites are accessible only by boat, you can truly appreciate just how vast this lagoon is.

Best for

This is the perfect place for couples looking for a quiet and peaceful holiday in the Maldives, as well as for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts who value time spent on the coral reef more than nightlife. With a game room and a kids’ pool, families are also well taken care of here.

How to get to the hotel

International flights land at Velana International Airport in Malé. From there, the domestic flight takes about an hour, after which you’ll need to transfer to a boat that will take you to the islands of the Meemu Atoll. If you ask the resort to arrange transfers when booking, this will make handling your luggage and planning your schedule as hassle-free as possible.

A week, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival by seaplane and first swim

After landing in Malé, you’ll transfer to a domestic flight and, as the final leg of your journey, head to Meemu Atoll aboard a speedboat. You’ll arrive on the island in the late afternoon. Leave your luggage in the villa, take off your shoes, and take your first stroll along the sandy beach. Order a drink at the bar and settle in at your own pace, watching the ever-changing play of light on the lagoon from the sun terrace.

Day 2

House reef and lagoon snorkelling

Pick up your diving mask at the dive centre and head out from the beach directly across the water to the local reef. There, you’re sure to see coral formations, reef fish, and, occasionally, sea turtles swimming by. Once back on shore, dry off on the sun terrace and spend the hottest part of the day at “Udori,” where you can cool off. In the late afternoon, you can take a barefoot stroll along the coast, enjoy a refreshing drink at the bar, and then have dinner at the restaurant with a sandy floor.

Day 3

First dive in Meemu Atoll

Sign up for a morning excursion at the diving club. Since Meemu is one of the relatively quiet atolls, the dive sites here are generally less crowded than those on the central atolls. After the returning by boat, spend the rest of the day on the beach or by the pool. Book a spa treatment at the overwater treatment room. The sound of the waves in the lagoon stretching out below you is one of the charms of this place. Have a late dinner and gaze at the starry sky.

Day 4

Water sports and sunset fishing

In the morning, enjoy water sports on the beach. In the afternoon, consider taking part in a laid-back “sunset fishing” excursion, during which you can hand-line fish from aboard a local boat. Upon your return to the resort, they can even prepare your catch for you. After taking a shower and changing into comfortable clothes, head to the bar and enjoy a cocktail at sunset. If your schedule allows, be sure to catch Bodu Beru’s performance with his drumming troupe in the evening.

Day 5

Slow day and spa treatment

Spend a peaceful day, the kind that’s only possible on an island. Book a full treatment at the overwater spa. There, you can enjoy a massage while listening to the sound of the waves coming through the floor. Afterward, stop by the café for a coffee in a relaxed setting, have dinner in a peaceful atmosphere, and turn in early.

Day 6

Second dive day or lagoon exploring

If you are diving, take a second trip further out with the club. If not, ask about a boat over towards the two over-water lagoon suites to see how the far side of the lagoon looks. Spend the afternoon in the pool or the fitness centre, then find a spot on the sand for sunset. Karaoke or DJ nights run through the week; pick one and stay up late.

Day 7

Beach dining under the stars

Let's make a reservation for dinner on the beach tonight. The tables are set right on the sandy beach, with the sound of the waves serving as background music and the sky providing the perfect backdrop. But first, let’s spend the day in a relaxed atmosphere. Go for a swim, lounge on the beach chairs, or read a book. Save your appetite for dinner, and after your meal, take a short detour on your way back to the villa.

FAQ

What are the best and worst months to visit the Maldives?

The dry season, from December through April, is the best time to travel, as the sea is calmest and the skies are clearest during this period. The rainy season lasts from May through October, when it rains frequently and the sea is rough. At the end of October, when the hotel were there, the rainy season was coming to an end. It’s warm, and there are occasional showers, but prices are generally lower compared to the winter high season.

Which is nicer, the Seychelles or the Maldives?

Both places are beautiful, but they differ in atmosphere. The Seychelles feature granite mountains and forested islands, as well as many attractions on land, so they are especially recommended for those who enjoy hiking or island hopping. The Maldives, on the other hand, are flat and tranquil; development here is concentrated mainly around lagoons and coral reefs, and, as on Medhufushi Island Resort, most hotels are on a single private island. If you simply want to enjoy the beach and snorkeling and spend your holiday in almost complete seclusion, the Maldives are generally the better choice.

What month is the Maldives cheapest to visit?

Prices are lowest during the rainy season—that is, around May, June, and September. This is because it rains frequently during this time, and there aren’t many bookings. In late October, when this tour takes place, low-season rates are still in effect, which are lower than those during the high season from December through March. If you book the tour in advance and plan your trip outside of school holidays, you can reduce your costs even further. In addition, remote atolls, such as Meemu of, often offer better value for money than the atolls in the centre.

Which is better, Bora Bora or the Maldives?

On the island of Bora Bora, an impressive volcanic peak rises from the sea, and since the surrounding lagoon is dotted with small resorts, the main attraction here is the landscape itself. The Maldives, on the other hand, stretch across numerous atolls and offer a wider selection of islands, price ranges, and coral reefs. When it comes to the variety of diving opportunities and the chance to enjoy the atmosphere of a completely private island at affordable prices, the Maldives are often the preferred choice, especially for travellers from Europe.

Is it worth going to the Maldives?

It’s the perfect place to relax on the beach and by the coral reef. The water in the lagoon is crystal clear, the coral reefs are within swimming distance, and life on each resort island moves at its own pace. Medhufushi is on the Meemu Atoll and is one of only two resorts on this atoll, so it has a more relaxed atmosphere than the atolls located closer to the centre. For those looking for a town they can explore on foot or who prefer a lively nightlife, this is certainly not the place, but for anyone who wants to spend their days in a relaxed setting, a trip here is definitely worth it.
