The setting
This hotel is in Venice Mestre, directly across from the Mestre train station. From here, you can reach the island of Venice by train in about 10 minutes. Since this area is more of a lively residential neighbourhood on the mainland than a tourist area, it’s quiet here even at night. Both Porto Marghera and the Toniolo Theatre Theatre are within walking distance, and there are numerous cafes and shops around Ferretto Square. From a practical standpoint, the hotel is also well-equipped; for example, it offers free Wi-Fi and on-site parking.
What to expect
This 4-star hotel was built thanks to its convenient location near public transportation; it has 209 rooms and boasts a tradition of hospitality spanning more than 50 years. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a desk, a safe, and a shower. The The Soul Kitchen restaurant offers a menu featuring regional specialities from across Italy and also has a bar where guests can enjoy a pleasant evening. With three conference rooms equipped with Wi-Fi and audiovisual equipment, the hotel is the ideal choice for both business trips and leisure stays.
Things to do nearby
Porto Marghera makes a pleasant setting for a morning stroll before you catch the train into Venice. If you’d like to attend an evening performance, the Tonio Theatre is just a few minutes’ walk away. In addition, Piazza Ferretto—Mestre’s main square with its many cafes and shops—is just a short walk away. The Mestre City Hall tower is a bit further away, but it’s still within walking distance, and there you can soak up the atmosphere of the mainland city on the other side of the lagoon.
Best for
It’s perfect for couples who want to fully enjoy the charm of Venice but don’t want to pay a high price for accommodations on the island. Thanks to the train service, you can easily take day trips to St. Mark’s Square or Dorsoduro, and return in the evening to Mestre, where it’s quieter, to spend time there in a peaceful setting. For guests arriving by car, parking spaces are available on the hotel grounds.
How to get to the hotel
It takes about 17 minutes to reach the hotel by bus from Venice Marco Polo Airport; the Venice Mestre train station is right across from the hotel and can be reached on foot in just a few minutes, even with luggage. The train ride from Mestre Station to Venezia Santa Lucia on the island takes about 10 minutes. If you’re arriving by car, you can use the hotel’s parking lot. Since parking spaces around the lagoon are limited, this is very convenient.

Your 4 days, loosely planned
Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.
Arrival and a first look at the lagoon
After dropping off your luggage at the hotel, walk straight to the Mestre train station. In ten minutes, you’ll arrive at Santa Lucia Station, and the Grand Canal will come into view. Take a leisurely stroll toward the Rialto Bridge, enjoy a few “cicchetti” and a glass of wine at a “bacaro,” and watch the light dance across the water’s surface. Late in the evening, take the train back to Mestre and spend a quiet evening at the hotel bar.
San Marco, Doge's Palace and Dorsoduro
To avoid the crowds in St. Mark’s Square, you should leave for Venice early. Let’s set aside about two hours to explore the Doge's Palace, and then cross the Accademia Bridge to the Dorsoduro district. There, you can wander through the small galleries and cafes along the canal and enjoy a peaceful day. On the way back, consider having lunch at one of the local trattorias. Once back in Mestre, enjoy dinner at the “Soul Kitchen” restaurant, which serves regional delicacies from all over Italy.
Islands day: Murano and Burano
Take the train to Venice, then transfer to a vaporetto and head to the island of Murano to visit a glassblowing workshop. Then you’ll head to Burano Island, where you’ll see rows of colourful fishermen’s cottages and lace shops. Don’t forget to bring your camera and comfortable shoes. You’ll have lunch on Burano. Seafood delicacies are the main attraction here. In the afternoon, you’ll head back. Upon arrival in Mestre, consider enjoying an aperitif before dinner in Piazza Ferretto.
Slow Mestre morning and the trip home
Spend your last morning in Mestre in a relaxed atmosphere. Take a stroll to Ferretto Square, enjoy some coffee and pastries there, admire the Mestre City Hall tower, and pop into the shops frequented by locals. If you have time, take a walk around Porto Marghera to see the lagoon’s industrial area from a different perspective. Return to your hotel to pick up your luggage, then head straight to the train station or take a bus to Marco Polo Airport (travel time: 17 minutes).

FAQ
How many days is enough for Venice?
If this is your first time here, three nights would probably be the ideal length of stay. That way, on the first day you can take your time exploring St. Mark’s Square and the Doge's Palace; on the second day, the Dorsoduro and Rialto districts; and on the third day, Murano and Burano. If you stay in Mestre, you can save on lodging and get to Venice by train in about 10 minutes.
What is the cheapest month to go to Venice?
November, as well as the period from January through early February, are generally the best times to travel, provided that carnival season rates haven’t gone into effect yet. Outside of the summer peak season and the Biennale period, prices for lodging and airfare drop significantly. Mid-October, when this trip is scheduled, falls on the border between the low and high seasons. Prices are lower than in August, and the weather is generally still relatively mild.
What time of year does Venice smell bad?
In the height of summer, roughly from July through August, an unpleasant odor may emanate from the small canals (rii), as the heat during this time coincides with low water levels. In mid-October, when your stay is scheduled, temperatures will have already dropped and water levels will be high, so the unpleasant odor generally won’t be a problem. Additionally, during your stay in Mestre al, you won’t be staying right next to a canal.
Can you wear jeans in Venice, Italy?
Yes. When walking around Venice, jeans are perfectly acceptable in restaurants and most bars. The only thing to keep in mind is churches. In religious buildings, such as St. St Mark's Basilica, shoulders and knees must be covered. So it’s best to bring something you can wear over a T-shirt. More important than the dress code is comfortable footwear. Since you’ll often have to cross bridges, please keep this in mind.
Is Venice still worth going to?
Yes, that's true. There's no place quite as unique as this one. During the day, St. Mark's Square is, of course, very crowded, but early in the morning and in the evening—as well as in the outlying sestieri—it's relatively quiet. If you choose the Hotel Plaza Venice in Mestre as your base, you’ll be able to easily take the train to and from the island, which will allow you to avoid the high prices on the island during peak season.
