In Venice, prices are generally lowest in the middle of winter—that is, in January and February—when the influx of tourists associated with Christmas and Carnival subsides. Prices are also lower in November al, but there is a risk that some parts of the city will be flooded due to “acqua alta” (high water). From spring through summer, as well as during the film festival in early September, prices rise sharply.

In the height of summer, roughly from July through August, a pungent odor may rise from the canals, as this period coincides with heat, low tide, and slow-moving water. This odor is usually strongest in narrow tributaries during low tide. During relatively cool and rainy periods, such problems rarely occur, and near open bodies of water, such as Campo San Giacomo del Orio, the odor is practically undetectable.

Venice receives the most rainfall in the fall, especially in October and November. During this time, flooding known as Acqua Alta can even inundate low-lying squares. Spring rains occur in April and May, and summer, although relatively dry, can be accompanied by severe thunderstorms. Winter is characterized not so much by heavy rain as by cool temperatures and high humidity; fog often forms in the mornings.
