The setting
Since the Ariston Hotel is in the centre of Rome, near Termini Station, you can explore most of the Old City on foot. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is right next to the hotel, and the surrounding streets aren’t an area isolated from tourists, but a place where you can experience the city’s vibrant daily life. Since the metro and Termini train station are also right nearby, you’ll have no trouble getting around the city after your morning coffee.

How to get to the hotel
Fiumicino Airport is around 30-40 minutes by taxi in light traffic, or you can take the Leonardo Express train direct to Termini in about 32 minutes and walk from there. Ciampino is a shorter drive on the other side of the city. A transfer can be arranged at the hotel if you'd rather not deal with luggage on the metro.

Arrival and the basilica quarter
After dropping off your luggage at the hotel, start your walk at the nearby Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Ancient Rome on foot
Choose a route that heads south toward the Colosseum and includes stops at the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. It’s worth making a short detour to the Column of Antoninus Pius and Piazza Colonna—it’s the perfect spot if you want to take photos in a peaceful setting. Spend the afternoon exploring the area between the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon, and before dinner, round out the day with an aperitif somewhere near Piazza Navona.
Slow morning and departure
If you still have some energy left, work out at the hotel’s gym, and then take a stroll around the neighbourhood to enjoy some pastries and coffee. If you still have things to do nearby, it’s best to take care of them now. You can either return to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and explore its interior at your leisure, or treat yourself to one last ice cream. Termini Station is within walking distance, which is very convenient for continuing your journey by train. If you’re flying out, you can book a transfer to the airport at the front desk.
