The setting

It is situated in a quiet neighbourhood, surrounded by residential homes, and offers views of the caldera and the volcano from the hotel grounds. Local taverns and the beach are within easy walking distance, and KTEL buses from Akrotiri provide convenient access for day trips to other parts of the island.

How to get to the hotel
Santorini (Thira) International Airport is about 15 km north of Akrotiri; depending on traffic conditions, it takes about 25–30 minutes to get there by car. The hotel will be happy to arrange a transfer for you if you request it when making your reservation. The ferry docks at the port of Athinios, which is about a 20-minute drive from the hotel. Since there is a shortage of taxis on the island during peak season, the hotel recommends arranging a transfer in advance or renting a car for the week.

Arrival and first caldera sunset
Upon arrival at Santorini Island, take the shuttle bus to Akrotiri. Once you’ve unpacked your luggage in your room, head straight out onto the balcony and enjoy your first view of the volcano, which is visible across the sea. After you’ve unpacked in a relaxed atmosphere, take a stroll through the narrow streets around the hotel to soak up the atmosphere of this place. As the sun gently sets, order a glass of Assyrtiko wine at a nearby taverna and watch as the caldera, stretching out beyond the boats, takes on shades of pink and gold.
Red Beach and Minoan ruins
First, enjoy breakfast on the terrace, then take a stroll to the Akrotiri archaeological site, where you can spend a few hours wandering through the fresco-adorned streets of a hidden underground city from the Minoan civilization. From there, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to Red Beach. Here, the rocks against a backdrop of volcanic sand shimmer with rust-coloured hues. Bring water and shoes with non-slip soles, relax on a lounge chair during the day, and be sure to try some grilled fish on your way back.
White Beach by boat
Head to the small boat dock near Red Beach and hop on a water taxi heading toward White Beach. White Beach is tucked away beneath light-coloured cliffs and can only be reached by water. Spend the morning swimming in the crystal-clear, shallow water or reading a book in the shade of the trees. After returning by boat, enjoy a cozy lunch at the “Neo” café, located right on the beach, and spend the hottest part of the day in the hotel pool to cool off.
Oia and the northern tip
Take the bus or drive up to Oia for the day, wandering the whitewashed alleys, poking around the ceramic and jewellery shops and finding a quiet spot on the walls above Ammoudi Bay. Walk down the steps to the fishing harbour for lunch, then head back up in the late afternoon. You can either stay for the famous Oia sunset or return to Akrotiri and watch it from your own balcony.
Wine country and Pyrgos
Give the beach a rest and spend the day inland among the vineyards. Visit one or two of the wineries around Megalochori and Pyrgos for a tasting of Assyrtiko, Nykteri and the sweet Vinsanto. Climb up through Pyrgos village to the Kasteli for wide views across the island, then finish with dinner at a taverna known for tomato keftedes and slow-cooked lamb before heading back to the hotel.
Slow day at the pool
Take it easy after a few busy days. Have a long breakfast, then claim a lounger by the pool with a book and let the morning drift. Kids can splash about in the children's pool while you read. Walk down to a nearby beach for a swim in the sea before lunch, nap through the hottest hours, then take a taxi to Fira in the early evening for cocktails on the caldera edge.
Volcano and hot springs
Book a boat trip out to Nea Kameni, the volcanic islet in the middle of the caldera. You'll walk up the crumbly black path to the crater rim, feel the sulphurous steam vents and take in the full circle of Santorini from the top. The boat usually stops at the warm sulphur springs off Palea Kameni for a swim, then continues to Thirasia for lunch before crossing back in the late afternoon.

Is Apanemo Hotel a good choice for families with young children?
Yes. This hotel is marketed as “ideal for families with children,” and since there’s a separate children’s pool next to the main pool, even young children can play in the water in their own area. In addition, since Akrotiri is in a quiet area, there is less traffic and fewer pedestrians compared to the bustling villages on Santorini, which parents really appreciate.
Is August a good time to stay here?
August marks the height of summer in Santorini, and this is when the island experiences prolonged heat and drought. Since the water temperature is pleasantly warm and the nights are long, this is the perfect time for a late dinner outdoors. Since the sun is very strong during the day, it’s best to visit Red Beach or White Beach in the morning or late in the evening, and spend the hottest hours of the day by the pool. Be sure to make reservations for restaurants and boat tours in advance.
