Why we love it

The setting

This hotel is in Exomytis on the southern coast of Santorini, near the small village of Agios Georgios and just a few minutes’ walk from the black-sand beach of Perivolos. It’s not so much a bustling area with nightlife as it is a quiet corner of the island, where white-and-blue Cycladic-style buildings line the streets, with a pool nestled among them. Here, overlooking the Aegean Sea, time passes very slowly—as it does only by the sea.

What to expect

Ten room categories run from Junior Suites to Seaside Suites with private heated plunge pools and expansive terraces for sunbathing or al fresco dining. Interiors keep a simple white palette with a king bed, sitting area, mini bar and flat-screen TV. Most accommodations look out over the sea, and there's a shared pool, a bar and a restaurant on site.

Things to do nearby

Perivolos Beach is a little further down the road. There, you’ll find a beach with black volcanic sand, lined with taverns along the coast. Vlychada Beach, with its white cliffs that resemble sculptures, is a little further along the coast—it’s a quick drive there, but the walk takes a bit longer. The Port of Athinios, the island’s largest ferry port, is also conveniently located for day trips and onward travel to other islands in the Cyclades archipelago.

Best for

Couples come here to enjoy the private diving pool, the ocean view, and the relaxing atmosphere typical of the southern coast. Since there are also playgrounds and children’s pools, families are always welcome here. In addition, the quiet beach nearby is ideal for children who aren’t yet strong swimmers. It’s the perfect spot for travellers who want to enjoy the scenery of Santorini without having to jostle through the crowds in Imerovigli.

How to get to the hotel

Santorini National Airport (JTR) is about a 20-minute drive away on the opposite side of the island; during the high season, flights arrive here from Athens and various European cities. The port of Athinios Port, where ferries arrive from Piraeus and other islands in the Cyclades archipelago, is just a few minutes’ drive north of the island. You can arrange a transfer from the hotel when making your reservation, and upon arrival, taxis and rental cars will be available.

Your 6 days, loosely planned

Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.

Day 1

Arrival and settling in by the pool

Pick up your key, drop off your luggage, and enjoy the view of the terrace and the sea stretching out beyond it. Spend the your first day lounging by the pool with a refreshing drink in hand, then take a stroll to Perivolos to wander barefoot along the black sand beach. Return to the hotel, take a shower, admire the orange sunset over the sea, and enjoy dinner at the hotel restaurant to prepare for tomorrow’s road trip.

Day 2

Black-sand beach day at Perivolos

Since Perivolos is just a few minutes’ walk away, you should head out early, while the sand is still cool. Rent a lounge chair at the beach club, and after swimming in the crystal-clear sea, enjoy a cozy lunch at a beachside taverna, where you’ll be served grilled squid and Assyrtiko wine. In the afternoon, take a walk south toward Vlychada Beach and admire the white cliffs shaped by the wind. This landscape creates an atmosphere reminiscent of the surface of the moon.

Day 3

Oia, Fira and the caldera rim

In the morning, drive to Fira, park on the outskirts of town, and take a stroll along the narrow path that runs along the caldera, where snow-white churches with blue domes are perched on the cliffs. Then you’ll continue on to Oia. After lunch, you’ll have time to leisurely explore the galleries and jewelry shops. You can either stay there and enjoy the famous sunset from the castle ruins, or head back south to admire the sunset from your terrace—with a glass of wine from a local winery in hand.

Day 4

Volcano, hot springs and Thirasia

Book a tour around the caldera from a small port and spend the whole day at sea. Hike to the crater on the island of Nea Kameni, enjoy the smell of sulfur and the panoramic views, and take a dip in the warm, ochre-coloured thermal springs off the coast of Palea Kameni, and stop on the island of Thirasia for a peaceful lunch in seclusion, far from the tourist crowds. The boat usually ends its day’s itinerary at sunset by the cliffs of Iia and then heads back.

Day 5

Wineries and the south-coast villages

Some of Greece’s finest white wines are produced on the volcanic soil of Santorini. Be sure to set aside a day for a wine tour of the wineries in the areas around Megalochori and Pyrgos. Taste Assyrtiko and the sweet Vinsanto, admire the low-growing grapevines trained into basket shapes, and enjoy lunch at a small taverna in Pyrgos with a view of the entire island. On the way back, it’s worth making a short detour to Akrotiri to explore the Bronze Age excavations preserved beneath a layer of volcanic ash, and to round out the day, take a dip in the hotel pool.

Day 6

Slow morning before check-out

Let’s spend your last day doing everything you really wanted to do but never got around to. You can go for a leisurely swim or order coffee on the terrace and watch the fishing boats head out to sea. Take a stroll back to Perivolos, enjoy lunch on the sandy beach one last time, or drive to the Vlychada marina to see the wooden fishing boats and the small museum of the tomato industry. After you’ve packed your things at your leisure, take one last look at the sea before heading to the airport.

FAQ

Is Sea Sound White Katikies suitable for families with children?

Yes, children are very welcome here. The hotel features a children’s playground and a pool. The quiet location on the south coast and the shallow waters at the nearby Perivolos Beach are ideal for children who aren’t yet strong swimmers. In addition, the suites with a separate living area allow you to enjoy a peaceful family holiday.

When is the best time of year to visit Santorini?

Mid-October—the time of this trip—is a wonderful time of year for this island. Thanks to the lingering warm days of summer, the sea is still warm, the light is soft, and there are fewer tourists around the crater. During the day, the air temperature is pleasant, reaching the low 20s, but you’ll need a light jacket in the evening. Since the quiet winter season hasn’t started yet, the taverns and wineries are still operating as usual.

What is there to do at the hotel besides the beach?

In addition to diving and snorkeling in the Aegean Sea, the resort also offers table tennis, which is a great way to get out of the sun and enjoy a short break. In addition, there is a pool for a relaxing afternoon, as well as a bar and restaurant that you can enjoy in the evenings when you don’t feel like driving. Since the resort features suites with their own heated pools, many guests hardly ever leave their terraces.

Do the rooms have sea views and private pools?

Most accommodations look out over the Aegean, and two of the suite categories, the Seaside Suite and the Junior Suite with Private Pool, come with a heated plunge pool on an expansive terrace. Other categories share the main hotel pool. Bed setups are king-size, with a sitting area, mini bar and flat-screen TV inside.

Is a hire car needed to get around from the hotel?

This is very convenient. Since the Exomitis Hotel is on the relatively quiet southern coast, it’s much easier to get to Fira, the vineyards, and it allows you to choose when to watch the sunset at your own convenience, without having to worry about bus schedules. Taxis and local buses also run here, and since Perivolos Beach is within walking distance, you can easily get by without a car if you plan to spend most of your time in the area around the hotel.
