The setting
This hotel is at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser mountain in the centre of Ellmau and has been run by the Hochfilzer family since 1832. The hotel grounds include four buildings, including the Gartenhotel Flora and Haus Garden. The village has a peaceful and picturesque atmosphere; the main street and shops are within walking distance, and the mountains rise up just beyond the rooftops.
What to expect
The rooms are spread across four interconnected buildings; the complex features a swimming pool, a rooftop sauna, and a fitness centre. There is a restaurant and a bar where you can spend the evening, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. With a game room and a children’s playground, this complex is ideal for family holidays; in addition, free parking is provided for guests.
Things to do nearby
Since the accommodation is just a few minutes’ walk from the The Hartkaiserbahn Gondola gondola lift, you’ll have convenient access to the SkiWelt ski resort’s network of lifts during your week of skiing. The Astberg lift is also nearby, which is particularly well-suited for skiing on gentle slopes and family trips. Since the centre of the village of Ellmau is right nearby, you can walk to the bakery, ski rental shop, and après-ski bars instead of driving.
Best for
Skiers who want the SkiWelt on tap without a shuttle, plus families making use of the playroom, playground and pool. Couples looking for a small, long-run family hotel with a sauna at the end of the day will feel at home.
How to get to the hotel
The drive to the Innsbruck Airport takes about an hour. Salzburg and Munich are also popular alternative destinations, with the drive taking between 90 minutes and two hours. If you are arriving by train, please get off at the Wörgl or Kufstein stations and take a regional bus or a taxi to Ellmau. In addition, the hotel offers a free shuttle from the train station upon request.

Your 6 days, loosely planned
Suggestions, not orders. Tour ideas to mix and match for your trip.
Arrival, village stroll and first sauna
When you arrive in Ellmau, drop off your luggage and take a stroll down the main street to soak up the atmosphere. Pick up your ski pass and stop by the ski rental shop next to the Hartkaiserbahn lift, which is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. When you return to the hotel, you can take a dip in the pool or relax in the Sky sauna and fully immerse yourself in the holiday atmosphere. Then head down to the restaurant, have an early dinner, and turn in early.
First runs on the SkiWelt
Take the “Ride the Hartkaiserbahn Gondola” cable car up to Hochsöll and spend the whole day skiing on the blue and red runs at the “Skiverde” ski resort. Have lunch at one of the mountain huts above Ellmau, then continue skiing until the light over the Wilder Kaiser mountain softens. Ski back down to the valley, take off your ski boots and slip on your slippers, and enjoy a visit to the sauna before dinner. A glass of wine in the relaxed atmosphere of the bar will be the perfect way to end the day.
Family day on the Astberg
Point the morning, you’ll head to the Astberg ski lift, which is near the hotel and is famous for its gentle slopes and sunny plateau at the top. The whole group, including beginner skiers, will be able to gain confidence on their skis here and then enjoy a cozy lunch in the sunshine. When you return to the village later in the afternoon, you can leave your young children in the playroom or on the playground while you relax by the pool and in the sauna.
Snowshoe morning and Söll afternoon
Swap your skis for snowshoes and set out on a roughly two-hour hike along the marked winter hiking trail that leads from Ellmau into the forests at the foot of the Kaisergebirge mountain range. When you return to the village, warm up with coffee and pastries, and in the afternoon, head to Zell to enjoy its livelier ski slopes. Upon your return, relax in the pool, have dinner in your room tonight, and get a good night’s sleep so you can fully enjoy your last day of skiing.
Big ski day across the SkiWelt
You set out early in the morning, hop on the gondola, and continue your journey along the interconnected network of trails toward Scheffau, Brixen, and Choralm. You enjoy skiing to the fullest while the snow on the trails is still fresh, then have a delightful lunch on the sunny terrace, and later in the afternoon ski back via Ellmau. To celebrate your day’s journey, you enjoy the “Sky” pool and sauna, savor a delicious dinner at the hotel restaurant, and round out the day with a glass of wine at the bar before bed.
Last laps and easy departure
Get off at the "Hartkaiserbahn Gondola" station, run about two laps in the morning—or, if your legs are tired, take a short walk—and then pack up your things and pay the bill. On your way back to the car, you can enjoy coffee and pastries in the village, or, if you’re returning by train, take the free shuttle to the station. Try to leave without rushing so you can enjoy a leisurely drive to Innsbruck, Salzburg, or Munich.

FAQ
Is Hotel Hochfilzer good for families with children?
Yes. The hotel has a game room and a children’s playground, and after having fun playing in the snow, the kids can enjoy themselves in the hotel’s own pool. The nearby The Astberg ski lift features a gentle slope for beginners, and since the village of Ellmau is small and quiet, families can walk around it without worry, even in the evening.
Is late December a good time to ski from Ellmau?
That’s right. If you’re here from December 19 through 24, you’ll find yourself right in the middle of the early part of the ski season. During this time, the lifts in Skiwelt are running, and the whole village is immersed in the Christmas spirit. In addition, snow conditions on the slopes in the high-altitude areas of Skiwelt are generally stable at this time, and the festive atmosphere in Ellmau during the holidays is one of the main highlights of visiting this place at this time of year.
What is there to do on site besides skiing?
This hotel features a pool, the Sky sauna on the top floor, and a fitness centre where you can stay active even when you’re away from the ski slopes. In the evening, you can relax in the restaurant or bar, or enjoy activities such as mini-golf on the resort grounds. For families with children, there is a game room and a children’s playground.
How close are the ski lifts to the hotel?
It's right nearby. The The Hartkaiserbahn Gondola gondola, which leads to the SkiWelt ski resort, is about one kilometre from the entrance to the complex, and the Astberg ski lift is also nearby. Since most guests don’t arrive by car but instead carry their ski gear on their backs and walk, the daily trip to the ski slopes is made much easier.
Is breakfast included and what is served?
Yes, breakfast is included with this rate. It is served as a buffet in the hotel's dining room, with the usual Tyrolean spread of breads, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit and hot options to set you up for a day on the mountain. Coffee and tea are on hand throughout the service.
